We recently stumbled across this posting which suggests that shampoo and other hair products are actually bad for your hair. And unfortunately, some people are actually heeding the advice given within. While we here at The Beauty Brains love to expose cosmetic marketing cons, we don`t like to see legitimately useful products bashed by people claiming to be in the know. So in this post we`ll look at some of the things claimed about hair products and whether there`s any truth behind the scandal.
Before exploring the specific claims in The Great Shampoo Scandal, keep the following fact in mind¦
You don`t NEED hair products (or any other cosmetic for that matter).
You can get along perfectly well without them. Of course, you won`t look, feel, or smell nearly as good, but these products have no bearing on your health. If you don`t care what your hair looks like you don`t need hair products. However, if you want a style you`ve seen in the latest issue of Glamour, then you absolutely NEED hair products.
And you need hair products that work well, which brings us back to The Great Shampoo Scandal. Obviously, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
The primary message from TGSS is that shampoo is bad for your hair and you should really be using soap. This is just plain WRONG! Soap is not a good thing to use on your hair. Don`t use it!
Why? While some of the details are inaccurate, they correctly point out in the article that soap reacts with something in the water (Calcium & Magnesium ions actually) and forms an insoluble scum. The insoluble scum is really a salt that does not dissolve in water. When you use soap to wash your hair, the insoluble scum is invariably left behind making your hair feel nasty and unclean. The detergents in shampoos do not react with the ions in the water like soap does, so this problem is solved.
Another notion from TGSS is that shampoo is very harsh, and damages your hair permanently. This is overstated but there is some truth in it.
Shampoos are harsh when compared to things like water or vegetable oil. But compared to other things like alcohol or acids, shampoos are pretty mild. Compared to soap, shampoos are only slightly more harsh, and that really depends on which shampoo is compared to which soap.
As far as hair damage goes, shampoos do permanently damage hair. But so does soap. And the damage caused by soap may actually be worse. Unfortunately, the hair damage story doesn`t stop there. Just exposing your hair to water causes permanent damage. Other things that are even more damaging to hair than shampoo including combing, drying, curling, and any other thing you might do to style it. Taking care of your hair damages it. That`s why you should be using a conditioner. Conditioners provide some protection against all of the damaging things you do to your hair. They actually work!
Brain`s bottom line.
There is no scandal regarding the use of shampoo. Shampoos are superior to soap for washing your hair. Everything you do to your hair damages it so use a conditioner to provide at least some protection.
