Here’s a first for The Beauty Brains, we got two questions that are essentially the same at the same time:

Jill Says:
I dye my dirty blond hair red, and it always fades very quickly. Would the colour enhancing shampoos and conditioners like those offered by Marc Anthony and Pantene really help keep my red longer, as I have to dye my hair every 4 weeks or so now, and I don’t think that is good for my hair? Thank You.

And Jessica says: What’s the best way to preserve hair color? Is it necessary to use special “color care” products? Thank you!

The Right Brain Responds:
We’ll try to answer you both at the same time. There are two major causes of hair color fading. One is UV radiation from the sun and the other is washing and rinsing. Some products contain UV absorbers, or sunscreens, that claim to prevent light induced fading but they really don’t do much. None of these products will have a significant impact on the amount of color lost due to UV exposure. The best defense against this kind of fading is to stay out of the sun or wear a hat.

The other kind of fading is even more serious. Even if you stayed inside all day, you’d still have a lot of fading just from the water that you wash your hair with. Pantene and Marc Anthony shampoos and conditioners don’t have any technology that can stop your color from washing out.

The only product we’ve seen that has any significant effect on reducing fading from washing is a leave in treatment from Tresemme. It’s called Colorthrive. It comes in a leave in spray and a cream. (You can pick one or the other, don’t use both.)

According to the company, it works by locking the color inside your hair. Unfortunately, you have to use it everyday to protect your hair from the next time you shampoo. It does really work on reds, browns, and reddish blondes, but it won’t do anything for light blond colors.

The Beauty Brain’s Bottom Line:
It’s tough to really protect your color from fading so don’t believe everything you read! Short of not washing your hair and always wearing a hat, you can’t completely stop fading, but depending on what color you’re using, this Tresemme Colorthrive could help.
