Ivy Inquires:
How difficult would it be for cosmetics producers to make one body cream that would be:
1. great moisturizer 2. skin refining 3. anti-cellulite (skin tightening) 4. tanning lotion 5. anti-aging 6. hair growth minimizing 7. UVA and UVB protective? It seems to me that this all in one would be a great thing for all us girls, but am wondering if all these ingredients could work together. How much would a thing like this cost?

The Right Brain’s Super-Satisfying Response:
Dear Lois Lane…uh, we mean Ivy,

You have great expectations for your beauty care products and we like that. You can’t always get what you want, but in the case of your “super-product” you may be getting closer than you realize.

A good moisturizer will give you MOST of what you’re looking for. Let us explain one item at a time:

1. Great moisturizer
There are many, many great moisturizers available so this shouldn’t be a problem.

2. Skin refining
What does this even mean? There’s no technology that really refines skin. It’s more about hydrating and smoothing. So depending on what you’re looking for, you can get this too.

3. Anti-cellulite (skin tightening)
As we previously posted, anti-cellulite lotions don’t really work.

4. Tanning lotion
There are several good self tanning lotions on the market, but choose the wrong one for your daily use and you’ll end up with too much color or the wrong color.

5. Anti-aging
Another marketing buzz word. Lotions can’t really make your skin age less, but they can protect it from sun damage, moisturize it, and keep it looking younger. Any good lotion with SPF will do this.

6. Hair growth minimizing Another lame product claim. There’s no over the counter technology to significantly reduce hair regrowth.

7. UVA and UVB protective?
As noted in #5, there are very effective sunscreens already on the market.

The Beauty Brain’s Bottom Line: The good news is that in terms of basic efficacy, it looks like current lotion techology delivers 4 out of the 7 items on your wish list. The bad news is, there’s no true Super-Product that’s going to blow you away. It’s not really a question of how much it would cost, it’s more an issue of the currently available technology not being able to deliver anything extraordinary. But we’re still trying!
