Berlina’s Big Question:
Can you please give us the scoop on the best haircare formulas for cheap?? There are so many! I wish I had a recommendation or two!

The Right Brain Responds: That’s a big question, Berlina. There are so many categories of hair care products: shampoo, conditioner, treatments, styling, etc, etc. Then, we’re not really sure what you mean when you say “cheap.” Yes, it’s a big question, but The Beauty Brains get paid Big Bucks for Battling Big questions. (Not!)

For this post, let’s stick to shampoos and conditioners. You’ve got a lot of great options to chose from, depending on what you want to spend. You can also mix and match different brands and price points. In almost ALL cases, you don’t really need to use products from the same brand.

For example, if you want cheap, I mean CHEAP, you can buy Suave, VO5, or White Rain for a buck or less at most food, drug and mass retailers. These are all good, basic shampoos. Suave and VO5 are a bit better in terms of formula and fragrance, but any of these will clean your hair.

Don’t expect much more than that, though. At $1.00, none of these formulas will moisturize or condition your hair. You’ll have to pay a bit more for that! That’s ok though, as long as you’re using a conditioner along with these value shampoos (assuming you need a conditioner, that is.) So, you could buy a really cheap shampoo and spend more money on a good conditioner.

What’s a good conditioner and how much should you spend? It depends on your personal taste, but testing has shown time and time again that Pantene conditioner is one of the best at any price. Tresemme, Dove, and Fructis are very good performers around the same price. ($3.00 to $5.00, depending on where you shop and which one you buy.)

After you get above $5.00 we’d say you’re beyond “cheap” but that depends on your definition of the term. We do know that just because a product is a lot more expensive doesn’t mean it works any better. That’s one of The Beauty Brains’ Basic Beliefs.

The Brains’ Bottom Line:
There are a lot of good, inexpensive hair care products available if you’re not a snob. Don’t believe the salon and department store hype and shop with your head – your hair will still look great and you’ll save a few bucks.
