Three Questions, One Topic
Our First Three-peat!

Renee Requests:
I’m a fellow beauty blogger, (www.blogforbeauty.com) and I’m glad we’ve got such a great community of beauty bloggers around! I visit your site everyday!

Just to ask a quick question – how do I get rid of post acne scars? I’ve heard some say an acid mask, but I’m scared to irritate my sensitive skin and make it breakout even more! You see, once I get a zit, it goes away after a day, but then the red “spot” stays on for months on end, making me look like I have a permanent pimple! I was wondering if you had any advice on how to get rid of them, and fast!?

Emma Inquires:
Hi, Ive had acne for a couple of years, and its only now after a visit to the doctors clearing up. However now the acne has almost gone scars are left, what products would you recommend for acne scars on the face.

And Debbie Doesn’t Know:
What could help an acne scar which is now purple-ish that’s been around for over a year?
Nothing seems to work!

The Right Brain Responds:
Acne scars can be nasty. And there isn’t one easy way to get rid of them. The American Academy of Dermatolgists show examples of acne scars and discuss treatment options but we warn you, these pics are pretty graphic.

There’s no way we’d post any of these acne scar pics on our site because they’re just too disturbing.

We’d never resort to using disgusting medical photographs just to shock and alarm our loyal readers….

Ok, maybe just this once…

Yuck! Well, don’t say we didn’t warn you!

But seriously, after perusing these pics, you should bend down and kiss the ground in gratitude that you don’t have acne scars like these! I’m mean – holy crap! We’re trained professionals and we still get queasy looking at these things!

Sorry, we digressed there for a moment: in a nutshell, here are the options available to you (click the AAD link above to read the details of each):

  • Collagen injections
  • Fat Transfer (yes, it’s just as disturbing as it sounds)
  • Dermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion (even the over the counter treatments or chemical peels might be helpful if your scarring is minor)
  • Laser Treatment ($$$$$$$)
  • And last, and probably least enjoyable, Skin Surgery.

The Brains‘ Bottom Line:
If you’ve got really bad acne scars like the ones pictured, you shouldn’t be surfing the internet in the first place. Drop your mouse, dial 911, and ask for the closest 24-hour dermatologist. Do it. Now!

If you’ve got milder scarring, you could try an AHA-type chemical peel; it could reduce the appearance of the scars. You might also ask your doctor about Differin, a drug that can help prevent acne scars from forming in the first place.

Most of my pitted scars and all my flattened scars were eliminated by using the very popular dermaroller method from overseas.( Please do NOT use this method on keloid scars.)

The dermaroller needles should be at least 1.5mm in length as it stimulates collagen production and pushes the indentation of the “scar” tissue back to the surface level permanently. No cream or lotion can promise that upon termination of using their product.

Dermarollers with needles shorter than 1.5mm are not deep enough to stimulate collagen and are a waste of time. Leaf & Rusher sells a dermaroler with very short the needles which are intended only used to expedite transdermal delivery of their facial serums.

Currently there are no US companies selling dermarollers with needles 1.5mm or 2mm long. Derma-Rollers.com and Dermaroller planet sell Dr. Roller and ZGTS brands to US customers from abroad.

Americans are skiddish about rolling their face with needles it works for many faithful users in Australia, Europe, the Pacific Rim and South America. Youtube dermarollers and you will see that even Rachel Ray featured a viewer who tested the procedure on her show.

If the pain is too much at first, apply a topical numbing cream like Emerol. Eventually your face gets used to the sensation and it it feels like a tingly massage. You will see a difference 48 hours after your first treatment. A significant improvement is evident after a month of weekly treatments.
