Do Stretch Mark Creams Like Vita-K Really Work?

Kia’s Question:
Does a product like Vita-k Stetch Mark Solution actually get rid of stretch marks?

The Right Brain’s Elastic Reply:
Stretch marks resulting from pregnancy (Striae Gravidarum) are pink or purple bands, usually across the stomach. These marks are caused by the pulling and stretching forces in the underlying layers of skin during preganancy. They are experienced by more than 90 percent of women in the later months of pregnancy, according to the American Academy of Dermatologists. (Interestingly, while they are common in cauacasion women, they are rarely seen in African American women.) But to answer your question, Kia’s, do creams like Vita-K really help get rid of these marks?

Well, here’s what one our our favorite official sources, the American Academy of Dermatologists, says on this subject, and we quote:

“Exercise and the use of lotions or creams with alpha hydroxy acids can be used to prevent striae,” said Dr. Kroumpouzos. “The use of retinoid products can also be used to fade the marks, but usually some silvery discoloration remains.”

But what about Vitamin K, the ingredient from which Vita-K takes its name? Does it do anything? Vitamin K (or Phytonadione, to be precise) is a drug that controls the production of substances that cause the blood to clot. It’s also been shown to successful in reducing dark circles under the eyes and bruising on the face.

So, while we couldn’t find any research that directly supports this theory, it looks like combination of a Vitamin K product to reduce the discoloration of stretch marks and a AHA or retinoid to minimize the physical striations might be your best bet.

The Brains Bottom Line:
You might also check out some of the online pregnancy forums and ask if any one’s had luck using a combination treatment like this.
