Dana’s Diligent Request:
There is a new facial cleanser containing SPF that I am curious about. It’s by a company called Freeze 24/7 and I read about it in Oprah’s magazine. It’s called Ice Shield. I was wondering how they would make a facial cleanser that cleans your face from dirt and free radicals as well as protect you from the sun year round? Could you shed some light on this for me?

The Right Brain’s Crystal Clear Response:
Here’s a case where there really is new technology behind an expensive department store brand. (And believe us, that doesn’t happen very often!) What’s the big deal? Just read what Freeze 24/7 says about Ice Shield:

The world’s first in preventative anti-aging skincare. By simply washing your face, Ice Shield™ provides protection against harmful UVA/UVB rays, one of the leading causes of skin aging. This super-charged SPF cleanser protects, hydrate, and clarifies your complexion while infusing skin with essential anti-oxidants. Easy to apply, rinses off like an ordinary cleanser, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue like a traditional sunscreen. What better way to feel protected from everyday incidental sun exposure? Skin is clean, refreshed, and always protected…all day, every day, winter, spring, summer and fall.

Wow! Is it true that this product uses technology that the big sunscreen companies don’t have? Yes, in fact it IS true, this product uses a special surfactant system that can deposit sunscreen ingredients while it cleanses. It’s nice to see real technology driving product innovation.

However, while it does work, we’re not sure it’s worth the money. $48 for 4.2 oz seems a bit pricey, especially when you consider you can get the same (if not better) protection at a fraction of the price by using a conventional sunscreen after you wash your face.

The Brains‘ Bottom Line:
This product does have real science behind it but it may not be worth the price. If you like to try the latest and greatest new products, give it a shot and let us know what you think.

Recently, I just heard about a cleanser by St. Ives. So there is a much cheaper option now, it’s only spf 10, though:
