Can Conditioners Make My Hair Curly?

by thebeautybrains on October 18, 2006

Silvia’s Question:
I want to know what is the active ingredient in a hair conditioner that helps to straight the hair and the opposite, hair conditioner that helps to get curly my hair. Excuse me for my bad english, I´m live in Buenos Aires.

The Right Brain’s Answer:
Hola, Sylvia, it’s always nice to get questions from our international readers!
Your question is easy to answer because in reality, hair conditioners can NOT make hair either curly or straight.

There are only two basic ways to control the shape of hair:
One is to work from the outside and lock the hair in a new shape by applying a styling product like a gel or hairspray. The other is to work from the inside and change the protein structure with a relaxer or permanent waving product. Conditioners (and shampoos too, for that matter) may say that they are designed for use on straight or curly hair but they can’t actually MAKE your hair that shape.
