Can Eye Lash Extensions Damage Your Lashes

Michelle’s Worried About Eye Lash Extensions:

What’s up with permanent lash extensions? I’m worried if I get them that I’ll lose what few I’ve got. Can you help?

The Right Brain Says She Should Be:

eyelash extension Jan Marini We’ve never seen any data that shows permanent lash extensions can damage your natural lashes, but we do know that follicles can be damaged by pulling or stressing scalp hair. Read this horror story about Heather who lost her hair from extensions. We wouldn’t be surprised if lash extensions had the same effect on your lashes. (And before you ask, no, we don’t think that Jan Marini can make your eyelashes grow faster! Sorry, we just had to add that comment.)

Thanks for reading The Beauty Brains!

I have had eyelash extensions twice, and my lashes definitely felt “beat up” after they all finallly fell out. Sometimes the false lash will start to lose its grip with the glue, and will kind of droop. It looks bizarre, so at that point you almost have to pull out the single lash to remove the false lash.

That said – they look fabulous when they’re on!!

Eyelash extensions suck! I feel bad for anyone who gets them I tell everyone not too.. everyone has naturally long eyelashes biologically speaking but there are some people that are born with thicker hair then others. This is why some people appear to have longer eyelashes then others.. they don’t their hair is just able to withstand the many pollutants in the air that damage eyelashes (notice MOST males tend to always have long ones? it’s because men have thicker hair!) You will hear alot of people say that there is nothing that can MAKE your eyelashes grow. That’s because they’re right nothing MAKES them grow. Porducts like jan marini eyelash conditioner simply protect your lashes so they are able to grow to their full potential. so if you want long lashes i strongly suggest max growth, jan marini, massive lash or sovage. There is help out there and no one told me this I had to figure it out by myself with no help from morons who don’t know what they’re talking about and say these wonderful products won’t work.

ps- extensions not only damage your eyelashes with toxic glue and the sheer weight of them you have to be mindful of them 24/7! Mine cost $65.00 and lasted about a week and a half. By that time half of them had come off and looked ridiculous. They tell you you can shower and swim and all that, you can’t! If you want them you have to go to the salon atleast once a week to get them refilled and they charge you everytime. I think this is a fad that will prove to be a huge waste of time!!

Left Brain October 29, 2007 at 6:58 am

Aaron,

You undermine everything you say by calling others morons. Name-calling is the last refuse of someone with a specious argument.

We’d be happy to evaluate any scientific evidence that the products you mention work. And if it is legitimate, we would announce it to the entire world that we were wrong. But just because you say it works doesn’t mean that it does. What’s your scientific proof?

Please spare us the anecdotal stories. For every one you can provide, I can provide 2 that says they wasted their money on Jan Marini.

Cynthia November 9, 2007 at 2:05 pm

Jan Marini Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner DOES INDEED make your lashes grow stronger, longer, and fuller. I have been using it for 2 months now, and everyone has noticed my lashes.

My friends thought I got eyelash extensions. It works, it’s great, and it’s the only one on the market like it.

I had eyelash extensions put on before a wedding. No One asked me if I had sensitive skin or use Retin A. I have both. When the process was finished they removed the tape they used to hold my eyes still while applying the extensions. This tape pulled off some of my under eye skin and burned iot some how causing me to have scabs around and under my eye. I immediately went to the pharmacy where the pharmacist said he was not allowed to advise me or make suggestions so I purchased hydrocortisone and neosporine , aloe and vitamin e. I have continued to super moisturize this area for months. While the scabs went away and there was no scarring I now have very deep crinkles in the expression lines around my eyes as where before there was barely any visibility of “crows feet”. I am wondering if there is any way to further undo damage to this very delicate area of the face? I don’t want this area to look 100 when the rest of me is still in the first quarter century!! Much Appreciation, Summer Thyme

Okay, so I am really scared. I have been wearing extensions since last year March. I honestly had long eyelashes but they would be straight…I wanted the nice curvy look that I couldn’t get with an eyelash curler. I went and got them done at a salon that is well known for their extensions. I heard that was the new trend and that your lashes would look gorgeous. And they did!

The problem I’m facing now is that most of my lashes have fallen. I can’t just stop wearing the extensions because I feel so weird looking at how short and sparse my eyelashes have gotten.

I already spoke with the salon and they will be taking them off in a couple of weeks. I just hope that my eyelashes grow again. I really wish that I would have stopped using them before it got this bad.

It’s hard to stop using extensions…but my eyes need the rest and the eyelashes need to grow back again.

Does anyone recommend a good product out there that can help me grow healthier lashes?

Lisa April 13, 2008 at 2:05 pm

I wish I would have read this before I had them done!
Wow they looked good but the tape pulling off my lower lashes, the scabbing, crusty eyes! Not worth it.
Now my own eye lashes are so so thin.
DO NOT DO IT!

lisa arciniega April 25, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Eyelash extensions can damage your natural lashes. I recently had the novalashes and now most of my natural lashes are gone. I dont recommend it.

lisa arciniega April 25, 2008 at 9:50 pm

you may want to try revitalash. It is quite costly though.

thebeautybrains April 26, 2008 at 12:01 am

I’d take a pass on the Revitalash. It doesn’t actually work.

PoseyParker June 5, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Wow. Well, I can relate with all of your comments.

I had extensions put on in February, and absolutely loved the result. I noticed right away, however, that fills were necessary every two weeks rather than monthly. This happened to be OK with me, as I have a flexible schedule, but I can’t imagine it would work for everyone.

I also noticed that I was allergic to the glue. For three days after my fill, I would have to take Claritin in order to minimize the itching and scratching that my eyes were causing. It downright hurt. Someone on this site mentioned that you shouldn’t use the glue if you use Retin A, is that true? There is Retinol in my eye cream, so maybe that’s the cause??

Anyway, I just removed the remaining few I had in, and I am now sporting my natural lashes, or what’s left of them anyway. They are extremely short, light sparse and missing in spots. I certainly hope that they will grow back in a month or so. I just take a multi-vitamin, and hope that that will help.

Any other words of advice I welcome.

Alexis June 9, 2008 at 11:48 am

I had lashes professionally applied ($300 initial charge, $80-100 fills every two weeks therafter). At first I was a believer. In fact, my mom purchased the lash kit and went to the classes to learn how to apply them so she could do me and my sisters.

My problem was that my lashes were straight and so the lashes looked very long from the sides, but did not do much to open up my eyes because they just drooped. So beware of that.

It was annoying when they became unattached at the base and were just hanging there …especially on the outer corners. If you are going to get them at least tell them not to put them on the eyelashes on the outer corners (they are too weak to support them and they will tangle with your lower lashes – VERY annoying).

I ended up keeping them on for about 3 months. When I removed them my lashes were about 1/2 the length they were to begin with – which surprised me because i felt they had been very gentle in the application and the removal – I never felt anything pull. It must just be the weight of the lashes and glue.

I used Revitalash for 2 months before I began to see a difference. But let me tell you, that is the ONE single beauty product that has ever lived up to it’s claims. I know the left brain/right brains will say this is anecdotal…but I saw the change. I’m a makeup junkie and have tried SO many products that failed to live up to their claims. This one did. I bought it for my 50 year old mom and literally saw her eyelashes DOUBLE in length.

The only problem is that I used the “pre-November 2007″ version- and with all the reformulations, I have no idea if the new formula will work. It’s frustrating because I don’t even know where to tell my friends to buy it (I found an old non-reformulated version on Ebay about 5 months ago, but I don’t think there are any more out there, and it’s always risky on Ebay).

kelly July 17, 2008 at 8:39 am

If you get eyelash extensions done by a professional-you will have professional results. If your lashes are straight to begin with, you need to have a certain curl put on-if not, they will look droopy.

65$ for a full set someone said above… do you think the person doing them are purchasing the best adhesive? no way. my glue costs over 150.00. You get what you pay for.

Unless your lashes are glued together- you will not loose any lashes because you have extensions on! If they are too heavy, they will aggrevate you. The lashes come in different lengths and thicknesses and curls. (colors too) The person applying them has to be knowledgable to know what to put on you. don’t go to a cheap salon. the glue may not be as good- and the lash stylist may be inexperienced.

kelly July 17, 2008 at 8:42 am

Plus, have the salon take a before and after photo– when your extensions come off, you will THINK your natural lashes have gotten shorter- but trust me, they are the same length! You are just use to the long extensions and don’t remember your lashes being that way.

maryann July 24, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I am really glad that I read this before getting this done. My salon is having a great deal on it, but after reading this, I will stick to my L’oreal telescopic mascara!! Thanks for all the honest postings.

Alexis August 21, 2008 at 1:54 pm

I did have mine put on by a professional – in fact, at a salon dedicated to nothing other than eyelashes. I felt I got the best application and product that money could buy – and they still caused my lashes to become thinner and shorter after they were removed. This was absolutely, unequivocally not because I had “forgotten how short my lashes were to begin with.” They were at least half the length they started with. I had to struggle to even get my little lashes to show with a curler and mascara, whereas before they were at least average length (and very thick). I was a HUGE fan of the extensions in the first couple months, but it got to the point where I couldn’t even maintain a full lash line because there were no lashes left for the technician to place the false lashes on.

My advice: use a lash growth serum (I can no longer recommend one because of the reformulations). I know it sounds unbelievable, but they work.

Cher October 9, 2008 at 8:52 am

I have been using extensions for about 6 mos. now and I love them. I am mid 40’s and due to age ended up with short sparse lashes. They stay on great and haven’t damaged my lashes at all. I do want to try the eye lash conditioner though and see if it will make my natural lashes grow back to the full lush long lashes I used to have.

Olivia November 6, 2008 at 12:26 am

Eyelash extensions WILL NOT pull your lashes if the tech is skilled at there craft. If they use cheap glue or use to thick of a lash on thin or sparse lashes it can damage the natural lash.
If the tech does not use thinner sized lashes on your natural thin lashes they will droop and put to much weight on them and it can damage them . If you have thin lashes ask your tech to use thin lashes – tell them not to use to many 20 mm in thickness. You, can use lash tonic to go thicker they work as well .

I went to get eyelash extension in Jan. it’s the beg of feb and the extensions are gone along with my own eyelashes, I wish I would have researched more on extensions, and are praying to get my eyelashes back.. I am filing a consumer’s affair complaint.. they should tell you at the salon there is a risk of loosing your own eyelashes.. Had I known this I would have never gotten this done.

skinnielashvictim February 13, 2009 at 10:22 am

I worked for one of the top eyelash extension companies and I can tell you that they do damage your natural lashes. I had the extentions applied by a master stylist/corporate trainer and within 2 days half of the extensions had fallen out with my natural lashes attached. The eyelash extension companies don’t tell you that over time this does effect your natural lashes. Even the President of the company I worked for took “breaks” from having the extensions applied. They are only interested in the money so don’t fall prey to claims of “committed to consumer safety” statements.

Jennifer March 9, 2009 at 1:49 am

Skinnie lash- What lash company did you work for ? What is your name? Sorry, your story about working for this company seems far fetched. You only lose natural eyelashes if you pull on the extensions period

Lesley March 22, 2009 at 12:41 pm

I’ve been using ardell clusters and ardell adhesive for two years. I originally had extensions done at a salon, then as they fell off I replaced them myself. This has worked excellent for me I never put mascara on the extensions and just clean gently. I recently had an extreme eye infection which was a deposit on my corneas caused from my contacts. I removed all my eyelashes and have kept my eyes makeup free for the time being until eyes are completely healed. I would love to put the extensions back on when I get the ok from the eye specialist but am a little scared. Has anyone else ever heard of someone with good eyesight getting infections from the adhesive. According to my eye specialist the tar in mascara can’t be any healthier than the adhesive, she recommends only light use of eye makeup, special occasions etc. I can’t imagine going the rest of my life without doing my eyes up everyday.

Maureen April 16, 2009 at 1:23 am

I just had my eyelash extensions removed yesterday. Although this was a very gentle process with no pulling, I noticed that my own eyelashes are now about half the length they were before I had the extensions put on. I have been wearing the extensions for about 3-4 months with top ups every 3 weeks. And I can categorically say that it’s not just that I “think” my eyelashes are shorter. They actually look like someone has gone along them with a pair of scissors and cut them all to the same length. My natural eyelashes also used to taper at the ends to a natural point but these are now short and stubby. My top eyelashes are now shorter than my lower eyelashes and this was definitely not the case before I had the extensions put on. It was never mentioned at the salon that this might happen. I am scared that my eyelashes won’t grow back to their previous length.

Karen April 26, 2009 at 12:00 pm

I just had mine taken off. Way to high maintenance and I missed not being so careful about getting my face wet. I know my real eyelashes are shorter now. About 5 lashes in the middle of one eye were always shorter. Now they are all the same short length. Mascara used to make my lashes look long because they are light. Now mascara just makes them look darker, but still the same short length. I just hope they grow back.

Dana May 19, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Everyone has a similar story and I’m no different. I too had eyelash extensions applied and am now regretfully experiencing short stubby sparse lashes which were actually pretty long and thick to begin with. I am looking for answers and solutions. Does anyone know if the eyelashes grow back in or if they return to there former length and denseness? If the folicle is damaged then is there no hope? What’s the deal? Anyone?

jeannine May 19, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Same nightmare here. I had “luscious Lash” extensions. Very light weight and natural looking put on in January. It’s now May and most of my lahes are gone or barely there. It’s not my imagination. I went from sparse lashes to something more like peach fuzz. I tried the Jan Marino before the extensions and it worked to some degree but i didn’t get the results i was hoping for. Just started the new “Lytesse” 3 weeks ago. Not noticing too much difference yet, but Allergan claims that growth won’t be noticeable for 8 weeks and fully grown out in 16. If it works i’ll definitely let you know. I’ve been taking pictures once a week to make sure.

Carol May 27, 2009 at 4:38 pm

SHOCKED, I could not believe my eyes when I looked in the mirror. Very few lashes left. I would not recommend anyone to get extentions. Now I am looking in to finding out if I can find something to make my eyelashes grow back anyone tried the new products out there that say your eyelashes will grow thick and long?

Kristen July 1, 2009 at 9:45 pm

I only had my extensions for 2 weeks and a beauty consultant friend of mine told me to take them off right away or I’d lose my lashes. I immediately had them removed, professionally by a very expensive shop, and just like all of you above, my lashes now are short and stubby. Will they grow back on their own in a few months? I am so upset!

Kat July 23, 2009 at 1:03 am

I waited for my lash extensions to fall out on their own. And 4 months later my natural upper lashes are still half their original length and noticeably thinner. Like other commenters, my upper lashes are now half the length of my lower lashes. I had pretty nice long curly lashes before this and just wanted a more dramatic look for a family wedding. I researched online about lash extensions before going to a professional but never found such comments as on this website and others that I’m reading today. I would never have done it if I knew the risks. I definitely regret having placed lash extensions, ruining my natural lashes. PLEASE DO NOT GET LASH EXTENSIONS!!!Note: Natural lashes fully grow back every 8 weeks as they naturally fall out. If you haven’t seen a difference in 2-3 months, then… that’s it.

disappointed July 23, 2009 at 9:05 am

Eyelash extensions definitely damaged my eyelashes. I do have before and after pictures and so can illustrate that it is not imagined. My lashes are less than half the original length, half their original hair thickness, oddly straight, and some are just missing. This is just awful and should be publicized so that others will not have this experience. The notion that they don’t harm your lashes must be fabricated by their producer. I tried them to experiment before a wedding. Now I am going to the wedding with microscopic lashes.

When the lashes were on the eyelash extensions and struggled with them as some drooped etc. I had them removed after 1.5 months. My lashes are much shorter, thinner and some are just plain gone. I don’t recommend this to anyone.

dee dee August 9, 2009 at 8:02 am

I had my lashes for about 2 months. What a dissappointment. They only last 2-7 days before needing a refill, which they charge for. they did infact pull out my natural lashes. My lashes to begin with were thin and short, now they are all gone there maybe some peach fuzz in some areas.I am forced to keep going because my eyes look weird.I am a nurse and I’m embarassed to look funny and it is noticable. What am I to do. I young and my appearnce means alot.I will not recommend them. When the lashes are on they do look beautiful but at times they do droop and begin to seperate and look funny and what if your at work or out of town.I love my look with the lashes but the price i’m paying now isn’t worth it, I have no lashes.Any suggestions to regrow my lashes and how long if they will grow back.

flying at half Lash August 13, 2009 at 5:22 pm

I had the lashes for 3 mths approx. – 1 redoo which fell out in just over a week! My lashes are 1/3 as long as they were – serves me right for being greedy – i had lovely long sweeping lashes but I wanted glamourous for my holidays .. now? stubbs. I try not to think about it coz I’ll totally freek out. I have not told the beauty salon. Perhaps I should.

Cynthia Z September 1, 2009 at 11:43 am

I got lash extensions 2 weeks ago at a salon for the first time. I was told I wouldn’t have to wear mascara anymore. Great I said. When a few started falling out it looked awful so I got some baby oil like the tech said and tried to remove them. I have never felt so much pain. my eyelids were so irritated I had to see a Doctor. she put way to muh glue on and it was not coming off easy like she said. before I had thick eyelashes just not long. now I have thicker bottom lashes than top lashes. I would never recommend this nightmare to anyone!

Angie September 6, 2009 at 3:16 pm

I had lash extensions done at a swanky salon and it cost $350 plus $75 every 7-10 days for touchups. (The technician used a brand that requires certification) After two months, I lost nearly all of my natural lashes. That was in October of last year. It’s now September and my eyelashes have just started growing back thanks to Lilash. However, they are shorter and overly curly. I would never recommend lash extensions. Use false eyelash strips instead.

Shelly September 7, 2009 at 6:22 am

Hello
It sounded too good, but nothing but the truth, I did notice an immense difference that eye lash extension does cause your own lash to fall off. I have noticed like all other consumers who have tried lash extensions come on now you can’t say that we are all imgagining. My lashes did fall off, considerable amount about 60%.

Lash conditioners are really invaluable, I was really happy with the results but wanted a more dramatic, longer look mangified look. I will be sticking with lash conditioner. You don’t know the horrid feeling of sparse nothing there look, I miss my old real, original lashes. I wish I had not been so greedy as I now probably have to wait another 3 -6 months for my lashes to grow.

Robyn September 7, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Wow Ladies
What a BAD IDEA to get eyelash extenstions. Driving and seen a sign $55.00 eyelash extenstions. So I went in and it was like a chinese sweat shop of ladies doing nails and eyelashes. Well at that point i should have knowen better! she asked me no questions! red flag one, then used regular scotch tape to close my lower lashes, red flag two, then the burning OMG after I coulsn’t see for about an hour then my eyes stopped tearing. So I see the results not bad, uhmmmm i will be back before I go away on holidays, So two weeks later there Iam again getting filled and away I go not to bad this time, now iam telling everyone to get them done they rock! well i take it back I had them on for about a month little less and the glue was thick and they started to come loose. So Baby oil and vaseline it is. Off they came without ease! Do not do it. so Iam off to the store to buy false lashes till they grow back. So So Sad i feel so ugly

Tracey Jennings September 15, 2009 at 3:30 pm

I had extensions put on at the cost of $150 and told they would last for 2 weeks and then need refills at a minimum of $50. I loved the look and so did many people that I told. This included my husband who asked what had I done to my face when he first saw me. It’s now 3+ wks. and they are looking pretty bad. I’ve clipped them some and really don’t know what to do since I’m out of town and can’t get back to the salon for another week. I probably will not get them done again after reading the reports here.

I was really thinking about getting eye lash extensions, my friend has them and they look so dope..She said knowing how hard it is to have them, she would do it all over again.Hers are so beautiful and she has had them for a few years now.Considering she has a friend who does them for her for half the price every time…with that said she told me, don’t get them! They are to expensive and you have nice lashes and it will ruin them. Just for a small sec I kinda thought maybe she didn’t want me to be as gorgeous as she was so i found this web sight and I’m so happy i found it before i ruined my lashes..turns out she was right according to all the horror stories on this sight..Thank God I still have my long healthy lashes.I was so close to calling my friend to make an appointment just to try it,just to now for my self. I’m so happy I didn’t…thanks to my good friend and these stories. Thanks for the help.

Robin October 26, 2009 at 11:45 am

Eyelash extensions no matter how much you pay or how skilled the technician DO in fact thin and pull lashes out! There is nothing natural about placing glue between lashes to adhere extensions. A steady regime of this will pull lashes out, clog follicles and leave you lashless. I got the lesson the hard way and am praying that GOD will restore my lashes despite my foolish vanity in getting them in the first place. If He in fact answer my prayer, I will work with what he has given me and not question or insult his perfect design again!

Lisa October 27, 2009 at 1:57 pm

Oh man Ive just cancelled my 3rd top up appointment due to the fear of what Ive been told, hopefully my lashes will be ok, I will have to let them fall naturally and look stupid but rather this than risk them being pulled out at salon. My techician told me that dont damamge you as your eyelashes naturally drop every 45 days but Im wondering now whther this was true.

Sarah November 4, 2009 at 9:03 am

Yes, it does have to do with which brand that you use. First of all, whoever paid $350.00 for a full set and lost them in 1-2 weeks that is ridiculous and you should feel ridiculous for not saying anything about this to the salon. Normal extensions should last 3-4 weeks before a fill and you should still have 60-90% of the lashes still intact at this time. It does not damage your own eyelash b/c *growth* occurs in the follicle, not on your eyelash hair shaft. HOWEVER, If you did put stress on the extension or even had them removed by the professional it does cause stress on the hair and can cause them to break and be thinner UNTIL those lashes have shed and your new ones have come in. That said, a NORMAL (it could be longer) eyelash life cycle is 3-6 weeks, after these 3-6 weeks your eyelashes will be back to normal, hence that fact that Cynthia thinks Jan Marini works. It worked because your own eyelashes have now grown back to their full potential. That is like saying you’ve cut your hair and now it won’t grow as long as it was. You have to give it TIME, your eyelashes have been damaged if removed improperly. I do not even like to remove them for my client because of the damage it can cause. You can use something that counter-acts the glue which in every company is DIFFERENT, to remove them over the course of a few days. Please read into what your saying before you go saying things that can be easily disputed.
