Michelle’s Worried About Eye Lash Extensions:

What’s up with permanent lash extensions? I’m worried if I get them that I’ll lose what few I’ve got. Can you help?

The Right Brain Says She Should Be:

eyelash extension Jan Marini We’ve never seen any data that shows permanent lash extensions can damage your natural lashes, but we do know that follicles can be damaged by pulling or stressing scalp hair. Read this horror story about Heather who lost her hair from extensions. We wouldn’t be surprised if lash extensions had the same effect on your lashes. (And before you ask, no, we don’t think that Jan Marini can make your eyelashes grow faster! Sorry, we just had to add that comment.)

I have had eyelash extensions twice, and my lashes definitely felt “beat up” after they all finallly fell out. Sometimes the false lash will start to lose its grip with the glue, and will kind of droop. It looks bizarre, so at that point you almost have to pull out the single lash to remove the false lash.

That said - they look fabulous when they’re on!!

Eyelash extensions suck! I feel bad for anyone who gets them I tell everyone not too.. everyone has naturally long eyelashes biologically speaking but there are some people that are born with thicker hair then others. This is why some people appear to have longer eyelashes then others.. they don’t their hair is just able to withstand the many pollutants in the air that damage eyelashes (notice MOST males tend to always have long ones? it’s because men have thicker hair!) You will hear alot of people say that there is nothing that can MAKE your eyelashes grow. That’s because they’re right nothing MAKES them grow. Porducts like jan marini eyelash conditioner simply protect your lashes so they are able to grow to their full potential. so if you want long lashes i strongly suggest max growth, jan marini, massive lash or sovage. There is help out there and no one told me this I had to figure it out by myself with no help from morons who don’t know what they’re talking about and say these wonderful products won’t work.

ps- extensions not only damage your eyelashes with toxic glue and the sheer weight of them you have to be mindful of them 24/7! Mine cost $65.00 and lasted about a week and a half. By that time half of them had come off and looked ridiculous. They tell you you can shower and swim and all that, you can’t! If you want them you have to go to the salon atleast once a week to get them refilled and they charge you everytime. I think this is a fad that will prove to be a huge waste of time!!

  3. Left Brain Says:

    Aaron,

You undermine everything you say by calling others morons. Name-calling is the last refuse of someone with a specious argument.

We’d be happy to evaluate any scientific evidence that the products you mention work. And if it is legitimate, we would announce it to the entire world that we were wrong. But just because you say it works doesn’t mean that it does. What’s your scientific proof?

Please spare us the anecdotal stories. For every one you can provide, I can provide 2 that says they wasted their money on Jan Marini.

  4. Cynthia Says:

Jan Marini Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner DOES INDEED make your lashes grow stronger, longer, and fuller. I have been using it for 2 months now, and everyone has noticed my lashes.

My friends thought I got eyelash extensions. It works, it’s great, and it’s the only one on the market like it.

I had eyelash extensions put on before a wedding. No One asked me if I had sensitive skin or use Retin A. I have both. When the process was finished they removed the tape they used to hold my eyes still while applying the extensions. This tape pulled off some of my under eye skin and burned iot some how causing me to have scabs around and under my eye. I immediately went to the pharmacy where the pharmacist said he was not allowed to advise me or make suggestions so I purchased hydrocortisone and neosporine , aloe and vitamin e. I have continued to super moisturize this area for months. While the scabs went away and there was no scarring I now have very deep crinkles in the expression lines around my eyes as where before there was barely any visibility of “crows feet”. I am wondering if there is any way to further undo damage to this very delicate area of the face? I don’t want this area to look 100 when the rest of me is still in the first quarter century!! Much Appreciation, Summer Thyme

Okay, so I am really scared. I have been wearing extensions since last year March. I honestly had long eyelashes but they would be straight…I wanted the nice curvy look that I couldn’t get with an eyelash curler. I went and got them done at a salon that is well known for their extensions. I heard that was the new trend and that your lashes would look gorgeous. And they did!

The problem I’m facing now is that most of my lashes have fallen. I can’t just stop wearing the extensions because I feel so weird looking at how short and sparse my eyelashes have gotten.

I already spoke with the salon and they will be taking them off in a couple of weeks. I just hope that my eyelashes grow again. I really wish that I would have stopped using them before it got this bad.

It’s hard to stop using extensions…but my eyes need the rest and the eyelashes need to grow back again.

Does anyone recommend a good product out there that can help me grow healthier lashes?

  7. Lisa Says:

I wish I would have read this before I had them done!
Wow they looked good but the tape pulling off my lower lashes, the scabbing, crusty eyes! Not worth it.
Now my own eye lashes are so so thin.
    DO NOT DO IT!

  8. lisa arciniega Says:

Eyelash extensions can damage your natural lashes. I recently had the novalashes and now most of my natural lashes are gone. I dont recommend it.

  9. lisa arciniega Says:

you may want to try revitalash. It is quite costly though.

  10. thebeautybrains Says:

I’d take a pass on the Revitalash. It doesn’t actually work.

  11. PoseyParker Says:

Wow. Well, I can relate with all of your comments.

I had extensions put on in February, and absolutely loved the result. I noticed right away, however, that fills were necessary every two weeks rather than monthly. This happened to be OK with me, as I have a flexible schedule, but I can’t imagine it would work for everyone.

I also noticed that I was allergic to the glue. For three days after my fill, I would have to take Claritin in order to minimize the itching and scratching that my eyes were causing. It downright hurt. Someone on this site mentioned that you shouldn’t use the glue if you use Retin A, is that true? There is Retinol in my eye cream, so maybe that’s the cause??

Anyway, I just removed the remaining few I had in, and I am now sporting my natural lashes, or what’s left of them anyway. They are extremely short, light sparse and missing in spots. I certainly hope that they will grow back in a month or so. I just take a multi-vitamin, and hope that that will help.

Any other words of advice I welcome.

I had lashes professionally applied ($300 initial charge, $80-100 fills every two weeks therafter). At first I was a believer. In fact, my mom purchased the lash kit and went to the classes to learn how to apply them so she could do me and my sisters.

My problem was that my lashes were straight and so the lashes looked very long from the sides, but did not do much to open up my eyes because they just drooped. So beware of that.

It was annoying when they became unattached at the base and were just hanging there …especially on the outer corners. If you are going to get them at least tell them not to put them on the eyelashes on the outer corners (they are too weak to support them and they will tangle with your lower lashes - VERY annoying).

I ended up keeping them on for about 3 months. When I removed them my lashes were about 1/2 the length they were to begin with - which surprised me because i felt they had been very gentle in the application and the removal - I never felt anything pull. It must just be the weight of the lashes and glue.

I used Revitalash for 2 months before I began to see a difference. But let me tell you, that is the ONE single beauty product that has ever lived up to it’s claims. I know the left brain/right brains will say this is anecdotal…but I saw the change. I’m a makeup junkie and have tried SO many products that failed to live up to their claims. This one did. I bought it for my 50 year old mom and literally saw her eyelashes DOUBLE in length.

The only problem is that I used the “pre-November 2007″ version- and with all the reformulations, I have no idea if the new formula will work. It’s frustrating because I don’t even know where to tell my friends to buy it (I found an old non-reformulated version on Ebay about 5 months ago, but I don’t think there are any more out there, and it’s always risky on Ebay).

  13. kelly Says:

If you get eyelash extensions done by a professional-you will have professional results. If your lashes are straight to begin with, you need to have a certain curl put on-if not, they will look droopy.

65$ for a full set someone said above… do you think the person doing them are purchasing the best adhesive? no way. my glue costs over 150.00. You get what you pay for.

Unless your lashes are glued together- you will not loose any lashes because you have extensions on! If they are too heavy, they will aggrevate you. The lashes come in different lengths and thicknesses and curls. (colors too) The person applying them has to be knowledgable to know what to put on you. don’t go to a cheap salon. the glue may not be as good- and the lash stylist may be inexperienced.

  14. kelly Says:

Plus, have the salon take a before and after photo– when your extensions come off, you will THINK your natural lashes have gotten shorter- but trust me, they are the same length! You are just use to the long extensions and don’t remember your lashes being that way.

  15. maryann Says:

I am really glad that I read this before getting this done. My salon is having a great deal on it, but after reading this, I will stick to my L’oreal telescopic mascara!! Thanks for all the honest postings.

  16. Alexis Says:

I did have mine put on by a professional - in fact, at a salon dedicated to nothing other than eyelashes. I felt I got the best application and product that money could buy - and they still caused my lashes to become thinner and shorter after they were removed. This was absolutely, unequivocally not because I had “forgotten how short my lashes were to begin with.” They were at least half the length they started with. I had to struggle to even get my little lashes to show with a curler and mascara, whereas before they were at least average length (and very thick). I was a HUGE fan of the extensions in the first couple months, but it got to the point where I couldn’t even maintain a full lash line because there were no lashes left for the technician to place the false lashes on.

My advice: use a lash growth serum (I can no longer recommend one because of the reformulations). I know it sounds unbelievable, but they work.

  17. Cher Says:

I have been using extensions for about 6 mos. now and I love them. I am mid 40’s and due to age ended up with short sparse lashes. They stay on great and haven’t damaged my lashes at all. I do want to try the eye lash conditioner though and see if it will make my natural lashes grow back to the full lush long lashes I used to have.

  18. Olivia Says:

Eyelash extensions WILL NOT pull your lashes if the tech is skilled at there craft. If they use cheap glue or use to thick of a lash on thin or sparse lashes it can damage the natural lash.
If the tech does not use thinner sized lashes on your natural thin lashes they will droop and put to much weight on them and it can damage them . If you have thin lashes ask your tech to use thin lashes - tell them not to use to many 20 mm in thickness. You, can use lash tonic to go thicker they work as well .
