Heather Needs Help:
Hello! I am wondering what you think is the best natural solution for the dark circles under eyes. Do products like Hylexin really work?

dark circlesThe Right Brain Responds: You`re in luck, Heather. To help answer your question, we`ve recruited a special Guest Blogger: Dr. Michael Breus, PhD, author of the book “Good Night: The Sleep Doctor’s 4-Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health.” His book deals with beauty-related sleep issues and here`s what he had to say about your question:

What Causes Dark Under Eye Circles

Dark rings around the eyes”raccoon eyes”are a hallmark sign of poor sleep. The eyelid skin is the thinnest skin found anywhere in the body, so thin that it’s almost transparent. The darkness under the eye is really circulating blood in the soft tissues beneath the skin. Because lack of sleep affects blood circulation, it’s been theorized that sleep loss causes blood to pool under your eyes, giving you those dreaded dark circles.

Sleep Loss = decreased circulating blood in soft tissues + Delicate skin around eyes = increased dark undereye circles. The good news is that you can reverse this abnormal circulation by getting the right amount of sleep.”

Thanks to Dr. Breus for the background information. If you want to learn more, you can check out his websites at Theinsomniablog and Soundsleepsolutions.

So the good news is, a good night’s sleep will help. But are there any cosmetic products that can help fight raccoon eyes? Nothing has been proven very effective, but there are three different approaches you can try:

3 Ways To Treat Dark Under Eye Circles

1) We don’t strongly recommend it, because we haven’t seen any data that clearly shows that it works, but you can try a Vitamin K cream, like Vita-K. The American Academy of Dermatologists have said that Vitamin K works on the kind of blood pooling that causes facial bruises. This is very similar to the circulation problem that causes under eye circles. So at least there’s a scientific reason why it might work.

2) Some eye wrinkle creams, like Hydroderm Eye Serum, can provide a temporary tightening and smoothing effect that MAY help minimize the appearance of dark circles.

3) Finally, you can always cover up what you can`t clear up by using a tinted foundation to hide the dark areas.

Looks like your best bet is to get more sleep. Sweet dreams!

Why exactly / how exactly does more sleep lead to better circulation?

  2. iry Says:

I think sleep still helps for those who have dark circles because of late night sleep or stress. But those who have permanent dark circles like me, good night sleep doesn’t really help. ( I sleep about 8++ hours almost every day)

Some people with dark circles under their eyes have them simply due to genetics. I may be one of those people too. And if your eyes are deep-set (mine are, in part because I have an aquiline nose), then in certain lighting there will appear to be shadows. I don’t know that there’s anything you can do about that except strategic use of makeup… right?

Three months ago I would have believed this advice without question. Now however - I do have to question it.

I’ve been off work for about six weeks, I’m on medical leave. So I’m getting plenty of sleep, have very little stress at the moment, and it’s just me - so no spouse or kids to create stress.

But it looks like I have two black eyes! One is worse than the other, and I am not interested in covering it up - I’m interested in getting rid of them. I don’t wear makeup and don’t want to start just because of the dark under eyes.

I use Nulexin - a cheaper version of Hylexin, but I forget to use it at least the majority of the week, because I’m not used to putting stuff on my face.

Some of the other sites I’ve read (a google search for “dark under eyes” turns up a lot of results) say that there is NOTHING you can do about the dark under eye problems. That scares me a little.

I am turning 38 next weekend - so I suppose this could be a natural part of aging. But I’m still too young to look so old and tired - I can’t believe there’s nothing to treat it.

I hope someone else will have some good news to add here.

Rosie, it is possible that there is nothing you can do about it except cover it up with makeup. Cosmetics are limited in what they can do because they are legally not supposed to alter the body’s biochemistry. If they do they are drugs and for that you’d need a doctor’s prescription.

I have really bad seasonal allergies (seasonal is a funny term since there is something blooming that I am allergic to almost all year where I live!)

Anyway, my allergist says that my dark circles (or as he calls them “shiners”) are a result of the sinus problems I have as a result of my allergies. Not much helps but makeup, although in the mornings when my eyes are really puffy and dark, I use a refrigerated eye gel or a cool compress, it helps a little.

I find that consistant diet and exercise tend to leave me without the dark circles verses not. If I eat leafy greens…etc… and run at least an hour a day …………My dark circles usually go away…..and I look just as refresed as the next person. What could this hurt! You look good and get over your darkies! lol. Raw vegetable shakes and exercise are my answer. Give it a try and suprise yourself! ( Beets, purple onions, broccolli, and radishes ). One of many concoctions. try1

I have had dark under eye circles my whole life (seriously, there are nursery school pictures with them) I’m only 21, I drink lots of water and I’m fanatical about sleep.I’ve never found a makeup that properly covered them so I finally forked out for some benefit eye-con after reading some good reviews. I’ve been using it for about a month and whilst they’re not totally gone, they seem lighter and the skin is much much smoother and easier to cover. But I’m not sure if that’s because it has some ‘magic’ ingredient or just because it’s a great moisturiser and nothing more….

Ive got to share this. I use to have chronic dark circles, ongoing problem for many years. It didnt matter if I slept three hours, or all day. I think my problem was partially poor diet. However, when I tried Neutrogena’s Copper eye cream a few weeks afterwards the problem completely vanished. I dont use any type of eye cream much anymore. Still, even to this day Ive never had that problem anymore.

Try having your iron tested, you may be anemic. In that case, a liquid iron supplement such as “Flora Iron + herbs” would really help. And of course sleep.
