Bikini Kitty Shaving System

by Sarah Bellum on March 11, 2007

Hi Everyone! Sarah Bellum here with another product review. This time the Beauty Brains asked me to share my opinion on Bikini Kitty`s Shaving System for delicate areas. These products are designed to get rid of ingrown hairs and minimize shave irritation.

Bikini KittyFirst, let me tell you I LOVE Bikini Kitty`s sense of style. I opened the box and was thrilled to find the cutest little pink purse-like bag, filled with 6 different goodies all wrapped up with a clever laminated card that explains how to use them:

Body Brush: A natural bristle brush designed to help loosen ingrown hairs.
Bikini Blades: Two green and pink single-blade disposable razors.
Smooth Shave Gel: a see through gel to give you a slick, hydrated shave.
No Nick Razor Oil: A lubricant for razor blades.
Razor-burn Soother: An anti-irritant for razor scraped skin.
Everyday Magic Spray: An Alpha-hydroxy Acid spray that`s supposed to stop ingrown hairs from forming.

I`ll leave it to Lefty and Righty to figure out the formulas but I’ll share my personal experience using the products. I usually shave every other day and while I don`t have any ingrown hairs, I do occasionally get razor rash. The plus of these products is that they address the entire shaving process in a step-by-step methodical way. It’s a very well thought out system that addresses all the causes of ingrown hairs and irritation and it taught me a lot about shaving. (Did you know that multi-blade razors can cut the hair so far below the skin that it can become ingrown?? I didn’t!)

So while I learned a lot about the causes, I also learned it`s a lot of work to do it the right way! First you have to brush your skin to loosen the ingrown hairs. Then you have to oil up your razor. And you can`t use a double blade you have to use a single blade which doesn`t seem to shave me as close. (I felt more stubbley after I was done.) Then you have to apply their shave gel which is almost see through so it`s hard to tell where you`ve already shaved. Then, you have to dry off and apply a razor-burn soother. Then, later, you have to apply the Magic spray to prevent the hairs from becoming ingrown. Whew! After following all these steps for a week, I had shaving fatigue.

I would really recommend this kit for anyone who has a serious shaving problems. If you’re irritated “down there” you need some help! But, ’cause I didn`t really have much of a problem to start with I didn`t get all that much benefit from using it. As much as I loved Bikini Kitty, it was just too much work for me!

Sarah, thanks for the review. In terms of formulation, the only comment I have is that the Smooth Shave Gel is based on Stearalkonium Chloride, a quaternary ammonium compound that can be irritating to skin. That seems a strange choice for a product that’s intended to stop irritation. Maybe the gals at Bikini Kitty can comment on why they chose that ingredient for their formula when there are so many other non-irritating emollients available. Other than that, these formulas look fine to me. And I agree, the overall presentation of their products is VERY fun and engaging!

I agree that this system is a lot of work. I tried it a month or so ago and I’m not sure it’s quite worth it. I have very dark hair and very light skin. The included instructions to shave with or across the growth of hair just don’t work for me. The brush seems to be helping a bit, but I didn’t notice the lotion or spray doing much to relieve itching or bumps. I’m sure this can work for some, probably those with lighter color hair.

The kit is a bit of work – just got it last week-and following directions was new info to me… but after a week – there is no sign of ingrowns – maybe stubble – but I can still shave!! That alone is a real difference! No doubt about it! I can always shave stubble – but the bumps – no way!

I’ve been shaving for about 10 years now and never had much of a problem with ingrown hairs either but a bit of razor burn. I couldn’t really find anything natural to deal with those occasional red bumps and leave me feeling smooth so I created a product called Venereous Mountain Mist. It’s a simple blend of aloe vera to moisturize, witch hazel to stop bleeding and reduce infection and vitamin e and silk proteins to give you smooth skin.

We’d love to send you a sample if you’re interested to check it out. Just drop us an email.

Was this a complimentary product/affiliations/reimbursements?

This was a complimentary sample sent by the company’s PR firm. They did not pay for this post nor did they get a guarantee that it would be written about in a positive or any other manner.
