as a middle-eastern, i’ve been using kohl on my eyes for years. it’s what everyone uses. lead sulfate is the least poisonous type of lead and is only truly dangerous at very high temperatures (if it were on fire, for example). it’s been used for thousands of years. stop being babies and acting as though it’s made with pure lead. we obviously wouldn’t be wearing kohl if it was poisonous.

i just bought hasmi kohl ashwad without knowing that it had lead or that it was harmful. if i wanted to use this, what would be the “safest” way to do it? if i only line my upper lash line (without lining the inside of my eyes) will it still be harmful? and if so, what are the consequences?

Joanne, I’m sure if it did have lead, it wouldn’t pass the strict EU regulations, so you are fine with it. This article is refering to the not clearly marked products you could get at an Asian store, I believe.

I recently purchased the Dior Show Black out mascara from Sephora and it contains Kohl as one of the ingredient to darken the lashes. The mascara works great but after reading this post I’m not sure if I should return it. Do you know anything about the Dior Mascara? Thanks.
