Alright all you Beauty Brainiacs out there, it’s answer day! Last week, we asked you which of these materials were NOT being used in your cosmetics and hundreds of you answered. Only 25% of you actually figured out that Whale semen was the beauty science fake. See the explanations below.
According to a recent report by Cosmetic Design Europe, all of the materials below are being used in cosmetics except Whale Semen.
1. Cow dung. BEING USED. 47% of you were convinced this was the fake ingredient but you were mistaken. If you thought that pleasant vanilla fragrance was taken from a plant? Think again. Scientists in Japan claim to be able to extract vanilla fragrance from cow dung by heating it up under high pressure.
2. Sheep placenta. BEING USED. Only 5% of you picked this as the fake. You must have read our Mother’s Day post on placenta in your cosmetics.
3. Whale semen. THE FAKE. 25% of you correctly identified this material as the fake. It was actually an amalgamation of two real ingredients. As you may have read previously, Bull semen is making its way into cosmetics. And the whale ingredient used in cosmetics is whale bile. It is used as a fragrance fixative. Yum.
4. Chicken bone marrow. BEING USED. 24% of you thought this was fake but it’s real. According to the CTFA, this ingredient is an official name and can be used in any cosmetic you’d like to produce.
Thanks for answering. We’ll put up a new poll shortly.

wooooo! I got it right! Sure would be hard to harvest whale semen….
Oh my.. I just…. hmmmm. Don’t suppose that anyone would know what cosmetic products contain any of the above would they?
I totally thought my eyebrow gel had whale semen in it. I’m a little disappointed.
Laurie,
I’m sorry, you’re confusing your real life with the fictional movie “Something About Mary.”
Holly,
I’ve never seen anyone get so excited about aquatic mammal semen!
