Angel Asks: I’m using Maybelline Great Lash right now but it’s not really doing anything for me because I want longer and thicker lashes. I saw a commercial for this new Revlon 3D Extreme mascara, that gives 17X fuller, 70% curvier, and 50% visibly longer lashes. Please tell me if it’s any good before I waste my money. The Right Brain responds:
Is Maybelline better than Revlon?
As you know from our previous posts, mascara works by coating your tiny eyelash hairs with ingredients like waxes and polymers. The thickening effect varies greatly from product to product depending on which ingredients they use and how much they put in. So, we did a quick side by side comparison with the two products you asked about to see if we could see any major difference. Here’s what we found:
Seeing is believing
Photo one shows lashes treated with Great Lash. You’ll notice that on these lashes it looks like most of the coating is concentrated on the upper 1/3 or so of the lash. Not much is on the tips of the lashes.
Photo 2 shows Revlon 3D lashes. These lashes look like they’ve got more coating on the tips. It also appears like the natural curl of the lash is accentuated.
What do all the numbers mean?
We have no way of telling if 3D mascara really thickens and curls as much as Revlon claims. Companies are required to have support for their advertising and since Revlon is a reputable company, let’s assume they have SOME kind of data that shows such large percentage increases. The exact size of the number doesn’t really matter. It’s kind of a advertising game that is used by many companies in many different industries: create a test that gives you the type of claim you want to market. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as the advertising isn’t misleading. And in this case, at least from our quick side-by-side test, 3D looks like it does a pretty decent job. Interested? Have any of our Beauty Brainiacs tried this product?

I have never used Revlon mascara and I am not a great fan of Maybelline.
Maybelline mascara tends to make your eye lashes poke out rather than curl up.
I would recommend curling your eyelashes first and then using either L’Oreal double extension mascara or my new favorite Max Factor Masterpiece mascara.

Go to the “Forum” of this website (click that word on the top right corner of this page) and read the discussion by some of us for “Best Mascara’s You’ve Ever Tried”. I added Paula Begoun’s favorites from her website. Please add your own thoughts on which mascara you love, as well!
Miz Liz Says:
I think that the commercials for the mascaras are fraudulent since the models in them are obviously wearing false eyelashes. In the Revlon commercial, it appears to me that the model actually wears 2 pairs of false eyelashes. I am always reluctant to try products from commercials like that. If they used the pictures you used, which appear to be honest, I would consider trying it.
I always use an eyelash curler, and then draw the mascara applicator slowly through the lashes. It seems to deposit more product than flicking it through the lashes quickly, as I used to apply it. I use Maybelline with the curved brush. For some reason, it seems to work better for me than the other shapes of brush.

I bought that Revlon mascara and HATED it. It made my eyelashes so clumpy….and then started flaking almost immediatley. I am not a fan of Maybelines Great Lash either, although I like the XXX Volume. I am currently using their new define-a lash.I love it! I also really like Max Factor 2000 Calorie.

for huge fake looking lashes i would recommend either DiorShow or YSL Faux Cils. both do work. and well.
you get what you pay for.

I’m not a fan of Maybelline OR Revlon mascaras. For my money, the best for thick, full, long lashes are L’Oreal Voluminous or Cover Girl’s newest Volume Exact mascara.
Liz Says:
Lancome Definicils is the best. I have been using it for 20 years and don’t bother trying any of the new mascaras. Nothing compares…

Interesting, because in the UK the Advertising Standards Authority have just banned a L’oreal mascara ad. Here is teh summary from the BBC website: A L’Oreal commercial featuring Penelope Cruz broke industry rules because the actress was wearing false eyelashes, the advertising watchdog has decreed.
The advert for the firm’s ‘Telescopic’ mascara claimed the product could make eyelashes “up to 60 per cent longer”.
According to the Advertising Standards Authority, however, the advert misled because it did not make clear Cruz was wearing some individual false lashes. News Report

When applying mascara you should start by brushing the tips of your lashes with the wand in a windshield wiper motion first. Then apply it in the normal base to tip manner.
Of course curling first helps as well.
Personally I have liked Physicians Formula (I have sensitive eyes, especially when I wear contacts) and Rimmel brand mascara.
Currently I am trying Revlon Lash Fantasy. It has pretty good staying power, although it does flake eventually. Almost no stinging, and that fades quickly. Physicians Formula Lash in a Tube was kind of wimpy as far as thickness, but good for daytime makeup when I just want a tint. I cannot recall which of Rimmel’s formulas I tried at the moment, just that it was a nice medium thickness and length.

I recently got Maybelline’s newest mascara, Define-a-lash. It’s the best that I’ve tried yet! I also use a curler before I apply the mascara, and it holds the curl pretty well.

Dear Angela
Try the MaxFactor 2000 Calorie. I felt the same until a friend gave the MaxFactor I love it. I have not changed since then. Good Luck

I wonder if brush shape has a greater bearing on results. I got nice, lush lashes using a Dior mascara with a very fat, round brush. It seemed to separate the lashes as well as distribute the mascara evenly, so it looked very natural.
kathy Says:
I have tried Revlon’s 3-D mascara and absolutely HATE it, I clumps and just does not go on like the commercial says. I love the Define a Lash and Cover Girl’s Volume Exact
Mascara.
I tried going to a Revlon site to complain, but could not get to the “contact us”. Guess they don’t want the complaints!!!
To me 3-D mascara is a waste of ‘good hard to come by’ money. And I agree with what the BBC website says, these commercials should have women WITHOUT false eyelashes to show just what the product will do. To me, wearing ‘false eyelashes’ is “false” advertising!!!!
Karen Says:
Yes, Jess wears lash extensions; I bet that’s why they did not do a before and after. She has pretty eyes but lash extensions can cost $200 or more and via licensed lash extension professional application.
Rhianna Says:
I have to say I’m very picky when it comes to my mascara. I like every other woman wants long, thick, lucious lashes. Once in a while, for special occasions, I will glue on some falsies, but that takes time too. I have a recommendation for any woman that wants beautiful, long lashes. Almay - Triple Effects, it’s in the big, long, white tube. At first it will be a little goopy so get a little of the mascara off the brush. Start applying at your outer lashes from the bottoms up and work your way in. Before it dries completely apply a second coat if needed… those lashes will look amazing. I have had people ask if I had false lashes on when only using this mascara!
Emily Says:
i purchased the 3D mascara, i was skeptical beacuse i ususaly use great lash. i found that the 3D is a zillion times better. i love it.
Deb Says:
I,too, tried Revlon’s 3D mascara and hated it! It clumps and flakes. I’m back to L’Oreal’s Voluminous mascara-used it for years with no problems.
Maria Says:
The best mascara is Estee Lauder “more than mascara, you can layer it to be very thick and the color is the Richest , darkest black ever !
Diorshow’s black is more like a grey, I hated this mascara
ana Says:
