Beauty Science Poll Answer – Men Like Pumpkin Pie

It looks like we’ve got some pretty bright Beauty Brains out there. A whopping 61% of you correctly identified Pumpkin Pie & Lavender as the scents that reportedly turn men onpumpkin pie the most. The rest of the votes were split pretty evenly with the other choices including 15% for buttered popcorn, 12% for orange, and 11% for Black licorice.

You’re either really observant or you are familiar with the beauty science study done by Dr. Alan Hirsch at the Smell and Taste Institute.

Aromas that effect male sexual response

In the study, the researchers assembled a group of 31 men between the ages of 18-64. After screening them for their ability to detect different common odors, the researches hooked them up to a plethysmograph. Yeah, this is a little (or big) ring that slips on their you-know-what and somehow gives a recording of the amount of blood flow.

The volunteers are then made to sniff various odors and their plethysmograph readings are taken. A total of 30 odors were assessed.

Top male odors

Here are the top odors with their effect on male blood flow.

Lavender and pumpkin pie: 40%
Doughnut & black licorice : 31.5%
Pumpkin pie & doughnut: 20%
Orange: 19.5%
Lavender & doughnut: 18%
Black licorice and cola: 13%
Black licorice: 13%
Doughnut & cola: 12.5%
Lily of the valley: 11%
Buttered popcorn: 9%

It turns out buttered popcorn is the least effective. You might want to rethink the next “night over for popcorn and a movie” date.

I think it’s hilarious that they would even think to test the smell of doughnuts! I wonder how they chose the scents to test.
