Well, it looks like we’ve got a few bright Beauty Brains out there. A couple hundred of you answered the beauty science poll, but only 39% correctly identified the fake story. In fact, women prefer reddish colors more than men. Read on for the rest of the explanations.

piranha1. Some people hear colors and see sounds - TRUE. 17% of you thought this was fake but it’s true. This is a psychological phenomenon called synethesia that about 1 in 23 people experience. Somehow the sensory systems in these people’s brains are intertwined more than the rest of us. This causes odd experiences like seeing colors when music is played, sensing different tastes when certain words are heard, or seeing certain colors associated with numbers & letters. Interesting stuff. Think you have synesthesia? Take this test now!

2. Men prefer reddish colors more than women. - FALSE. It is actually women who prefer reddish colors over men. 39% of you correctly predicted this was the fake story. According to recent research published in Current Biology, scientists verified the common notion that women prefer pink. That tested groups of men and women and asked them to pick their favorite color from a series of 2 choices. Most interesting to me was that the universal favorite color was Blue.

3. Excessive vitamin use can lead to heart disease. - TRUE. Only 18% of you thought this was BS and this makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I really get annoyed by the makers and sellers of vitamin supplements. Anyway, in this study scientists from the University of Utah showed that excessive levels of the antioxidant, glutathione, actually may contribute to heart disease. The work was done on mice so we’ll have to wait and see whether they are directly correlated to humans. In the meantime, I’d suggest you get your vitamins the old fashioned way, eat you fruits and veggies!

4. Flesh-eating fish are used to exfoliate the skin - TRUE. 26% of you couldn’t believe this was true (and neither could I until I read about it) but it is real. According to a newspaper in China, there are spas that offer pools of “doctor fish” which eat dead skin cells. Reportedly, you only feel a pleasant tingling on your skin. How fun! You know, maggots can be used for the same purpose. I wonder if we’ll see a maggot pool in some higher end salons.

Come back Monday for an all-new Beauty Science or BS.

Yay, I got it right! I knew that flesh-eating fish one was true because I went to an aquarium in Seoul, South Korea. They have a tank where you put your hand in and the tiny fish come and nibble at your dead skin cells - it doesn’t hurt but it really tickles. One guy spent about 15 minutes getting his hands clean…I guess that’s one way to do it.

Oh my goodness! I have synethesia! I had no idea. I knew that it referred to a condition where you can see sounds and hear colors and such, but I had no idea that it also covered the experience of visualizing days of the week as certain colors! Or visualizing time in 3D! I totally do both of these things and have always had trouble explaining this to people. Now I know it has a name! And that it’s not just me!
