Is Your Hairdresser a Cow?

Apparently, that’s what some disheveled hair styles made people think during the 17thstatic flyaway century. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word cowlick refers to a patch of hair that grows in a different direction than the rest of the hairs. This beauty term came from the fact that when you have a cowlick, it looks as if a cow had licked your head. Thanks god for styling products! Incidentally, I asked Left Brain and there is no truth to the rumor that you can buy a hair gel based on cow saliva.

Do YOU have a cowlick? If so, how do keep it from ruining your style? Leave a comment and let the rest of the Beauty Brains community know.

CUTE picture! I do have a cowlick on the right side of my bangs. I generally keep them long so I forgot about it until last may when I had bangs cut…it’s not horrible!

I have *two* cowlicks– one on the front right hairline, and one on the left back hairline. The one in the back is weighted down by my hair, which is why I never cut my hair shorter than my lower hairline. The front only shows when I have short bangs; then, I use a *lot* of styling product to make it lay down. Otherwise, I just part my hair on the right and call it good.

As I always advise my clients, it’s best to work with your hair rather than trying to make it do something that it doesn’t want to do. For the girls, keep it longer so the weight pulls it down, that may mean a fringe or layering around the face. The fringe works better for people with thin faces as it makes you look healthier, and layers for a rounder or squarer face as it softens the sides and gives you a move oval shape. For the guys, a good strength moulding paste should help.

I’m late to posting this reply but I have a big cowlick on the back of my head (on one side at the top) and I just go with it. My hair is short and I just let the hair do whatever the heck it wants… altho I do use styling paste (and/or other products) to give texture and lift… I think the little swirl back there is kinda cute! (Yes, I’m a woman :)
