Big Bad Baby Hairs

by Right Brain on November 26, 2007 · 97 comments

Andrea asks: I have a question regarding short “baby-like” hairs that grow around my hairline. I’ve had them ever since I was little and I’m wondering why they never grow out. They’re not due to damage. They’re not long enough to be “fly-aways”, but they’re obvious enough that I’m too embarrassed to pull my hair back in a ponytail. Is there anything I can do, or any product I should use, to help these baby hairs grow out?

california babyThe Right Brain Replies:
We recommend washing your hair with baby shampoo, wearing Baby Phat perfume, dressing in clothes from Bebe, and listening to music by the 70s glam-rock band, The Babys. Joking!

Why are some hairs different than others?

Seriously though, there’s really nothing you can do to make your “baby hairs” grow out. Their size and shape are determined by the genetics of your hair follicle. Some types of hairs are “programmed” to only grow so think and so long. You can read more about it in our post on “Why Armpit Hairs Don’t Grow Down To Your Knees.”

I’m sorry that we can’t recommend a product to help you battle baby hairs, but if they really bother you you might consider have electrolysis or laser hair removal.

Does any one else have trouble with baby hairs? Leave a comment and share your misery!

You’re an idiot if you don’t love love, and other love your baby hairs. Unless they’re doing you serious damage, which they couldn’t possibly, could they? (plesae let me know if ‘they’do, not like your frigging parents…leave them be and love!

Unfortunately, I too struggle with the tiny baby hairs that surround the crown of my head. In previous years, I have permed the baby hairs which evidently cures the problem for a while, however damages the root of your hair and creates an odd look when the baby hair begin to grow back and lose their sleek, straight appearance. Cutting them only makes matters worse as well.

stephenee October 30, 2009 at 6:06 pm

i have the same problem because i have very curly hair and straighten it… but i cannot get that close to the roots. so what i do is rub a little bit of super strength hair gel in between my hands and then just put a little bit on my hair. i then use a small britsled brush and brush it back into a ponytail but not too tight. if you use too much gel or pull your hair back too tight it looks unprofessional and oily. if that doesnt work try using a hair mold and put a little on the baby hairs with the same technique.

its not a misery story, but if u want a pony tail-use a brush with a bunch of bristles, the big round ones.first use a regular brush to get ur hair up and set were u want it,and use the big round annoying brush to comb them all flat and down, and the baby hairs too!

I’ve always had baby hairs and didn’t really mind them because they softened up my neckline. Then I cut my hair – I’ve had it in a pixie cut for a few years now and my hairdresser would shave the back of my neck to get a good neckline. I’m growing out my hair now, though and have noticed that those fine little baby hairs are growing out more like my normal hair, but they go way down my neck. I just want them to be small and fine like they were before. I don’t want a sasquatch neck. I’ve been researching and think I might try threading them They should grow back less noticeable. *hopefully*

I shave my baby hairs, and its actually not too bad, although it varies for everyone. I have very thick, wavy dyed red hair. My natural hair color is brown, so the baby hairs come back brown, and I just shave them away again. I usually have to do this every night. I use a concealer and foundation to blend, because where my baby hair is is lighter than the rest of my skin. The only thing that I don’t like about it is the way my head is shaped. It’s oval shaped, so if I shave it wrong, it could look like I have a receding hairline. Not what a seventeen year old girl wants. D:

Megan April 25, 2010 at 6:32 pm

I put some aloe vera on my hairline and rubbed it in and then left it in for like thirty minutes or so. It’s now a daily thing and they’ve started growing out…! I’m so happy! But I can’t gurantee it will work for everyone.

jimmy May 8, 2010 at 3:40 am

JUST CUT THEM, dingleberries! or pluck, geez, not rocket science.

my sister gave birth to a baby girl a couple of weeks back..the baby has tooooo many hair on her face esp. the forehead.. i need any best totka/tip about removing the hair from her face and her back..i have heard about rubbing aata/flour paste on the hair..is it good or any other advice ?

Sarah June 13, 2010 at 12:13 am

Not sure how “baby” you mean–could be vellus hairs if they’re ultra baby. But I have shorter fronds around my hairline, and now that I’m going grey around my hairline, they’re even more flyaway. I wondered if they were shorter because of brushing breaking off the ends there, but maybe that’s just how they’re made. I will say I had more of them in my teens (early 40′s now), and I did used to use hair clips and ponytails back then, which suggests breakage may be at least part of the issue.

Sarah June 13, 2010 at 12:14 am

…so if you do pull your hair back or put it up, don’t pull it too tight.

Ronit June 23, 2010 at 3:14 am

I have baby hairs that just won’t. grow. in! I was hoping to find some miracle product to help me out. I’m not insecure about them but was trying to find a way to take better care if it was caused by damage. Glad to know about the genetic programming. It saves me some fruitless/futile research. (But I think I might still try and hold out for something…)

Ariana July 7, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I’m a 13 year old girl, and I have baby hair on my forehead. It’s on both sides of the forehead but on one side it’s much worse.

My mom said that it wasn’t bad, but in my opinion it looked horrible so I cut it back on one side and that was a MISTAKE! Don’t ever cut your baby hairs.

Now I’m trying to cover them up since they’re pretty short… I usually just pull my hair over the baby hair like a bang and it works pretty well.

I was going to get it threaded off today, as a matter of fact, but opted not to because the woman who did it told me that it may grow back again worse and it wouldn’t be worth it.

Ho-hum. I’m just so self concious about this that I have no clue what to do. It doesn’t go back in clips and now my hairstyle options are limited.

If anyone has any ideas on what I should do, don’t hesistate to comment!

Sarah July 7, 2010 at 11:52 pm

It’s normal. Try to see the big picture of your hair and not stare at the baby hairs. They might even give a little softness to your face that other people can see as attractive (think of an up-do with deliberate tendrils of hair left to hang down and soften the look). Style your hair the way you like it, enjoy yourself, and let those baby hairs hang out.

Sarah July 7, 2010 at 11:56 pm

You could also ask a professional hairstylist if it’s possible to use thinning shears or a razoring technique on them. It won’t cut them off bluntly, it just takes out some of the thickness. Again, though, it would grow back, so you’d have to maintain it.

Sarah July 8, 2010 at 12:34 am

You can’t see it as well in this pic as some others, but Eva Longoria Parker has some baby hairs showing. And that’s after professional styling. http://celebrityphotos.instyle.com/dailybeautytip/photos/results.html?No=210

i have baby hairs so i shaved them off wich was somthing i totally regret now it looks like i have a buzz cut on my hairline is there anything i can do?!

Hayley August 2, 2010 at 9:08 am

Has anyone (for those who dislike their forehead) thought of a side swept bang? or even a straight across whispy bang? it would both hide your baby hairs, soften/frame your face, and decrease any severity a slicked back ponytail might emphasize. I have trouble with babyhairs, too. But I have a straight across bang, and I find it makes a high ponytail look even cuter than it would without a bang :)

Caila August 5, 2010 at 6:45 pm

I have the same problem….they SUCK! i cant straighten them and i cant cut them b/c they grow back worse. I wish there was a solution to this problem beacuse my hair just looks terrible any way i do it beacuse of the baby hairs. If you figure something out plz tell me.

katie August 19, 2010 at 12:23 am

my hair dresser said if u put aloe vera on them they’ll grow out longer but not much unforcanitly i got bangs to cover them up but i rlly miss pulling my hair back SO EVERYONE OUT THERE DONT CUT THEM!it just makes them much worse :(

katie August 19, 2010 at 12:30 am

im desperate to make them grow back!

JO Ann Woody August 21, 2010 at 2:08 pm

I have baby hairs and I hate them because you can never have a sleek looking pony tail. I have discovered that if you take clear mascara and sweep your baby hair back with the mascara wand into your regular hair that it sticks very well. Dont use too much though, just enough so that it keeps the hair from popping back up!

Sarah August 21, 2010 at 7:59 pm

I’d bet money that all of the poster’s baby hairs are 100X magnified in their eyes compared with what other people see. Please don’t feel like you have to wear your hair in a style to hide them, just let yourself enjoy what you like about the style (pony tail, up-do, etc) without focusing quite as much on the baby hairs showing. Almost everyone has something they don’t like or even hate about their hair texture or growth pattern–trust me, I’ve been relatively hair obsessed since I was 11. So even if you don’t see as much baby hair on everyone else as you have, chances are, at least half the female population feels just as worried about some other feature they don’t like in their own hair (widow’s peak, cowlick, frizz, wave, curl, too straight, too thin, too thick….). And that’s just hair–it doesn’t include hips, thighs, belly, breasts, too heavy, too skinny, freckles, moles, scars, too pale, too dark, etc.

nicole September 15, 2010 at 1:56 pm

i have had baby bangs since i can remember and im only 19. But right in the front they are really short and then still in the front but on the right and left side they are a little longer. they pretty much stay flat to my head. i hate them so much because i can never just trow my hair up in a pony. baby bangs suck! and i really wish there was away to fix them.

angelx November 17, 2010 at 12:28 pm

i’v had baby hairs ever since i was little they dont grow and im afriad to pull my fring back. what should i do

Lindsay November 19, 2010 at 2:56 pm

my friends make fun of me, but I personally like them….I embrace and make them part of my look! I love pulling some of my hair up in a barrette, while the baby bangs frame my face, its really a cute look! Although I can agree that sometimes when you want a sleek pony tail they can pop and look a little silly…..But other wise they are as cute as can be, and this is from a 32yr old. I think they make me look a bit younger when I have some hair pulled back! Now when they start graying, then….and only then will I be distraught! But until then, embrase them and be creative : )

Naomi December 30, 2010 at 4:59 am

yes, its also a really big problem for me. When i pull my fringe back into my pony tail loads of frizzy baby hairs show. It’s a really annoying problem…. I just wanna look good and ware my hair any way i like with out having to worry… And im defo not going for a lazer hair removal… no way hozay!
xxx

Naomi December 30, 2010 at 5:02 am

by the way people. It’s not really a good idea. But you still might want to go with it, You can buy tough hair gel and put a little tad on your finger and roll your baby hairs to gether and out the hair gel on them. They will stay back for a big longer……. Still…. x

ywerm-awm January 13, 2011 at 8:42 pm

YES THEY SUCK SO MUCH
i tried cutting them with scissors but all they do is grow back and i get made fun of daily because of them.
PLEASE RECCOMEND SOMETHING?!

Aisha January 14, 2011 at 12:24 am

I have baby hairs on my left forehead hair line. They just happen to grow right above the hairline that I want it to be and they look odd because they’re growing in a swirl of different directions. I also have some on the left but they’re longer and lower down to where my desired hair line is, so I can easily camouflage them.
My biggest problem is that I can’t shave those sparse little hairs because the hair line would be completely screwed up and would look like I have a bald spot on my left forehead.
These baby hairs are not only annoying when I want to wear a ponytail but they also clump up into weird locks (or wisps, more like) which make my hair look really oily……. I’m really jealous of people that don’t have baby hairs or have hair lines that come down symmetrically or even the people who have baby hairs that truly complements their face… =.=

One word: THREADING.

jamie January 26, 2011 at 7:21 pm

i have baby hairs to and my friends kept pointing them out so i shaved them. BIG MISTAKE!they always grow back and now they are more noticable then they were before and they feel like when a guy shaves his head and a week later a little hair grows back and its all prickley. sho i have to keep shaving it and i hate it. i have my hair parted down the middle so its hard to cover them up cause i dont have bangs. please help

Anna January 31, 2011 at 12:53 pm

I have the same problem- don’t worry. Many people love those darn little “baby hairs” on their hair line, But many people don’t. Like me. :) Mine are very short in the middle of my hair line and grow longer as they go to the left or right. I can easily make my baby hair less noticeable by taking just the TINIEST bit of gel or frizz creme, and whisk it upwards to the right into my hair. (as long as your baby hair matches your thicker hair) It stays on your hair, and you can’t notice them! I usually whisk them upwards towards the right side of my head so you can’t notice them sticking straight up.( working from the left to the right.) I hope this helps, it really works for me! Good luck, Anna

Maddie April 4, 2011 at 9:29 am

I tried using Nair to make them go away, but then they just grew back and looked funnier than ever.
Finally I actually waxed them away and they didn’t grow back.
Be careful with the wax though! You don’t want to take off any more than the baby hairs.

Lisa June 4, 2011 at 5:16 pm

I’m not really sure what baby hairs are, but after reading the comments, I think they’re basically just hair that grows at the hairline, that seems to stay the same length…right?

anyways, I love my baby hairs and they don’t seem to be a problem
some of them are longer and some are shorter but I just usually push them to the side and they just stay there

kelly brown June 19, 2011 at 4:04 pm

i have baby hairs 2 that really get me down when im wearing my hair back i wud do anything to get rid of them, it would look alot better!

BabyHairHater January 4, 2012 at 10:24 pm

I have been so upset about my baby hair recently its so nice to read this page and other people’s comments and experiences!! I thought I was the only one with unsightly baby hair!
I have a patch of babyhair that refuses to grow past 4 cm on my forehead. I have had it all my life, yet my mom still asks ‘why I don’t grow it out’. IT WILL NOT GROW.
I started cutting it, plucking it and then…. SHAVING IT. Shaving worked for about a week… then it grew back. Looked strange when it was growing back. Now looks even stranger! Much thicker and darker. I absolutely hate it.
I’m saving up for laser treatment, but am thinking of bleaching it now? Have any other people had experience with this?
