Neutrogena Wave Power-Cleanser Review

review-logo-23.jpgWhat’s pink and white and vibrates all over? If you’re Sarah Bellum, you probably have an X-rated answer. But if you said the Neutrogena Wave Power-Cleanser, then you may have discovered a fun and effective brand new gadget you can use to clean your face.

According to Neutrogena, it’s called the Wave because it’s “the next wave in cleansing.”  Like the Clarisonic, this product is the next generation of washcloth.  Information from its marketing company says it will “take your skincare routine to a new level” by sweeping away layers of dead skin cells. But do you really need to go to the next level? What’s wrong with simply washing your face to maintain healthy skin as you age?

Exfoliation Nation

To answer these questions, we have to talk about something today’s beauty-conscious woman thinks about as part of her personal skin care regimen that her mother probably didn’t. That something is exfoliation. Exfoliation, simply put, is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin. That might sound harsh but exfoliation is actually a natural process of the body.

When you’re under thirty, your skin sheds its dead epidermis about every 25 days on its own. Once you hit 30, however, this process slows down. That’s not a good thing if your goal is beautiful skin. If that top layer of dead skin cells stays put for too long, your complexion may appear dull and uneven. It can also feel rough or dry to the touch.

Exfoliation is an important step in your cleansing routine to expose younger skin underneath. If you do it regularly, you can improve your skin’s texture and help stimulate the production of new cells and collagen. The shedding process also unclogs pores to prevent blemishes from forming and allows your skin care products to reach deeper into the epidermis for better results. Additionally, it provides a smoother surface for your foundation to glide evenly over your face. Simply put, if you want healthy and radiant skin, you need to exfoliate.

Scrub-a-dub-dub

But who should do your exfoliation? You have choices. You can go to an esthetician and pay for her professional services. You can also do it yourself at home using a microdermabrasion kit or a facial scrub. Putting your skin in the hands of an esthetician might be a safe choice but it’s also an expensive one.

On the other hand, do-it-yourself microdermabrasion kits can be intimidating if you don’t have the confidence or experience using them. I use facial scrubs, the simplest of the choices, but I’ll admit that I haven’t always had good results. That’s because my skin is prone to redness and excessive vascularity. My experience has been that if I apply too much pressure, my skin becomes red, blotchy, and hypersensitive. This is sometimes referred to as “Angry Face Syndrome,” and believe me, it’s nothing to smile about.

Love the Wave!wave

Recently, Neutrogena’s Wave Power-Cleanser with Deep Clean Foaming Pads came into my life. I’ve used it every night for one week and now I’m hooked. Here’s what I like about it:

  • It delivers the perfect degree of gentle exfoliation that never damages my skin
  • It’s fast and easy to use: I just attach a pre-dosed, single-use, textured pad to the top of it, run it under water, press the button, and glide it gently over my skin
  • The gentle vibrating motion and tingly-cool foam gives my skin a nice, healthy glow rather than excessive redness
  • My skin immediately feels softer and the dead skin cells that were problematic near my nose and chin are now gone
  • It’s ultra light and comfortable to hold
  • It can be used at a sink or in the shower
  • It only takes up as much space as a bar of soap
  • It’s been gentle enough for me to use every day

On the back of the box, Neutrogena says this device is clinically proven superior to manual cleansing in three ways:

  1. 100% of women showed significantly deeper pore cleansing from its penetrating cool foam
  2. Its massaging, vibrating action opens pores to remove dirt, oil, and makeup and stimulates the skin’s surface
  3. You’ll see immediate softer, smoother skin after just one use

While I can’t substantiate their claims, I did find the Wave to be one cool little gadget for consistent and gentle exfoliation with a click of the button. It requires a single AA battery included with the starter kit, as well as a two week supply of single-use, disposable cleansing pads. It comes in pink, turquoise, or apple-green color schemes. And the price?  The starter kit sells for $12.99 and a 10-pack of refills pads is $7.49.

So now you know why I’m excited about my new pink and white vibrating gadget. Sarah Bellum, on the other hand, might have an entirely different story to tell you.

Have YOU caught the Wave?  Or do you like the Clarisonic system better?  Leave a comment and let us know. Or, you can start a thread and talk to Karen directly in the Beauty Brains Forum.

I love the Wave! It absolutely does work and is definitely worth it’s price, I think. I bought one the other day and just tried it out today. Already, I can see that it has cleansed my pores deeply. And exfoliated my skin, making it softer and ridding it of dead skin from the Winter air. My face looks and feels sooo clean. I love the Wave!

I love this product. I’ve been using the wave for a week with the salicylic pads and the results are awesome! I used to get something called a “silk peel” but it was 100 bucks a pop and I couldn’t do that anymore. So I’d been looking for an otc product that would give similar results and this is definitely it. I have better results from this than any serum from the department stores. And my skin looks as good as when I used to get the expensive treatment in NYC. I love the wave, it’s great ,,xoxo.

I’m under 30 years old, and this is by far the worst product I have used for my skin. The “vibrations” are weak and do absolutely nothing, and the cleaning pads release little to none foam. My skin isn’t any softer, and washing my face with Clean and Clear works 10 times better and helps with clearing up my acne. DON’T BUY THE NEUTROGENA WAVE DUO! IT’S A PIECE OF JUNK!

Love this thing! Bought it last night and used it. It made a huge difference after 1 use. I am 40 and have neglected my skin for a few years. After 1 use my face already feels smoother and not so dry. It was nice and gentle with just enough soap lather. Definitley a great investment.

I just got the wave today (the duo one that has two features) and it works awesomely. I am 11 going on twelve and it really helps cleanse so zits and pimples are prevented. I’d recommend the wave because it is for teens and it works well

Hey I had use the wave before i=and it made my skin glow! But, i dropped this product for proactiv :-( ! So, after like nine months, I bought it again yesterday. I hope it works like it did a while back. Now they have new pads that leaves skin oily free and blemish free. I bought those pads and just started it this morning. Now i remember why i fell in love with this nine months ago! My skin is so smooth. I will never use another product again! I don’t care how expensive it is! Its worth it! I don’t know about it clearing my acne up yet, but i do know it cleans great and i love it!

Hey Sharon. I just got the WAVE and all you need to do to make it lather is rub it around your face, put the pad on backwards after you use it a little bit, or rub the pad in circles with your finger and it should lather fine. I like the WAVE a lot. I just got it 2 days ago and it really makes my skin softer after every use. I notice that my face is glowing! Yeah glowing! And my face feels cleaner, too. I love it! I highly recommend this product but, it is not for everyone. Also you can use the cotton rounds and a different soap and that works, too.

For about 8 years now I have had severely dry skin around my T-zone. I have tried so many lotions and scrubs and nothing has worked for me. It looked like my face had dandruff will all the flakes coming off my face.

I’d like to thank the makers of the Neutrogena Wave for giving me the soft skin I have never had! After the first use I ran to my boyfriend and he immediately said, “Wow, you’re glowing!”. I haven’t been as satisfied with a product as I am with the Wave. I would buy it at any price!

I have found my holy grail and will never have to bathe my face ins tupid lotions ever again!

Hey ladies,
I have used the wave for three days. It makes my skin soft and glow. i didn’t have acne too bad, just once a month and random pimples. I used it the first day and it was great(just don’t use it very long cuz it’ll take sking off)! yesterday was the second day and I had a pimple, so I used the wave and about an hour later the pimple came to a head and the core came out. Then it started going away and by the end of the day it was gone!(yay). Today is the third consecutive day I have used it, but apperently three daysc in a row is too much for my sensitive skin because my face is red and a little warm.

I think it would be ok for teens once a week, or less. Just go once over your skin in one constant circular motion, or else you’ll peel. Also, make sure you rinse it off really well.

oh and warm water works better on pimples. I am 22(going on 23 in 6 days) and I have pretty nice skin. I am kind of a tom boy and this the first skin cleaner that I have used.

Good luck!

hi i live in barbados and i had to pay $46.95 for my wave, but it is great

Emily May 17, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Hey Girls,
I am sixteen and I have had the Wave for years. It works wonders on my skin! It is great for teens and adults alike. If you have really oily skin use the orange pads, they work best. You can also get it at WalMart (its cheeper then target). Good Luck!!

Lisa May 30, 2010 at 11:37 am

I just bought it today and i was so excited to use it. Im 13 and i have pesky blackheads that i have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of them and nothing works! My skin does feel softer but i think my skin is a little dry im going to use it again tonight.

For any English people reading this; I got The Wave for £3.99 from ‘Home and Bargain’ three days ago. It is the most incredible skincare product I’ve ever bought. I bought it for my 13 year old son who’s skin was breaking out badly and it immediately calmed his face and reduced greasiness, three days later and it’s almost completely clear. Tried it myself and was delighted to find my skin literally looking 10 years younger.

Rach June 6, 2010 at 3:40 pm

This did NOT work well for my skin at all. i got white heads and dry nasty pasty skin.

Hannah June 12, 2010 at 6:57 am

HI i have just brought this product and tryed it out i think it will make my ance disapear and my skin feels wonderful and soft

Lisa June 12, 2010 at 1:25 pm

i have been using the wave for about two weeks now and I LOVE IT! at first i was doubtful because my skin felt dry and very tight but the key is to put a VERY LIGHT mosturizer on after you use it. I found it works best at night at the end of a shower because your pores are open and the soap can clean your pores better. I used to have bumps all over my face and now i only have a few and i have a few pimples (very small) on my forehead between my eyebrows and they are fading. I have stupid pimples on my chin and they are also fading away. I have blackheads and they never go away but they are faded. Any body have tips on how to get rid of blackheads? If you do and it works you are a miracle worker. I am going to camp for two weeks so i cant write anything but after that ill keep you guys updated.

syd June 22, 2010 at 10:20 am

I got this product about two week ago, and at first it just made my skin feel a bit soft and cleaned it really well, but now I notice that my acne is going away. I had one bump that was pretty big, I just put the wave on it and held it down for like a minute and it was significantly smaller a moment later. then I did it again the next night and now it is gone. I really like it. I have alot of tiny acne and i dont think it is really getting rid of it but I really like it. My face tingles after I use it and I know it is getting deep clean into my pores. I am about to be 14 and I am extremely active so this is a great product. I definatly recommend it.

OMG I LOVE THE WAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i am 11 goin on 12 and recently ive started getting bumps and oily skin.I just got the wave duo and its works great!!!!!!!I used it bout 20 minutes ago, and my nose already feels less greasy!!i have these little bumps on my nose and i can barely feel them anymore!it felt great to use too!!I think the price isnt bad for something this great!!!!!!!I think it will work best if you use a light moisturizer afterwards.I highly reccomend this to everybody. If a 11 year old just starting to get bumps and oily skin can get results that fast it will work for anyone!!also i hav a question. If i have little skin colored bumps on my nose and its oily, what are these??thx!!!write back soon!

Lisa July 13, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I used the wave at camp but i did only use the pads but it didnt work and my skin is clearing up but i havent used it in a week

Emma July 15, 2010 at 10:35 am

I got the wave a couple of days ago, and I love it. My skin looks better and my acne has improved in just two days. Sometimes I just wanna use it because of the massaging feeling on my face!
The only thing I don’t like is the price for the pads. If they were cheaper I’d be a lot happier, and I’m gonna have to use the wave less than I would like because I can’t pay the price for these pads all the time.

Brittany July 21, 2010 at 8:50 pm

I was on vacation in england and i saw the wave there for only 1 english pound. Which is about $1.50 here. I was so shocked that it was so cheap there so of course i got it. It is pretty good. I like how easy it is to use in the mornings because i hate having to rub creams/wipes/liquids on my face using my hands. Because that always makes them sticky and its even nastier putting that on my face. But with the wave it’s a different story you dont have to deal with the mess, or worry of any thing spilling. So i do recommend it.

Brittany July 21, 2010 at 8:52 pm

and P.S. I agree completely with Emma
