Does Dermalogica Hold The Key To Younger Skin?

by Left Brain on January 6, 2008 · 9 comments

Vanessa’s very intrigued: What is so brilliant about Dermalogica’s Power Rich moisturizer anyway? It’s so special it even has its own special metal key to open the container up so that you can scrape the last bit of product from the tube!

The Left Brain’s not impressed:

The only brilliance I see here is the flash of marketing hype. Dermalogica’s Power Rich features a plethora of far fetched claims like inhibiting “enzymes which break down the skin’s natural structural support.”

Their reason to believe is based on a hodge-podge of pseudo-scientific ingredients such as natural algae, yeast-derived complexes, protein fragments, and a blend of biostimulating active botanicals including Red Seaweed, Rice Extracts, Soy Protein Phytoestrogens, Kukui Nut and Licorice. The company is also a member of the International Dermal Institute, which sounds very impressive until you realize that the Institute is not associated with dermatologists as the name implies. It’s actually a training center for skin therapists.

Since there are no references to any kind of study that could support the alleged functionality of these ingredients, this looks like another high priced product without any significant true technical differentiation. My dislike for Dermalogica is echoed by Paula Begone, the Cosmetic Cop, who also notes that the brand contains unnecessary irritating ingredients despite its claims to the contrary.

In my opinion, the coolest thing about this product is the key-operated collapsible packaging. It’s a nifty way to squeeze every last drop out of the tube. And I’d better be able to use every drop if I drop big bucks on a tube of lotion!

I am a dermalogica devotee and have been using it for the last 5 years. While I don’t use Power Rich, I really do love their products. I guess I’ll have to see what the cosmetics cop says about their range.

I have been using Dermalogica for many years and it is the brand I recommend in my salon.
There are MANY products in the Dermalogica line and their newest, Age Smart, really seems to have good results for everyone who has been using it.
I have not had ANY client have a reaction or irritation from any of the products.
People need to read between Paulas’ lines. I have the most sensitive AND sensitized skin and have not reacted to any of their products. I am not impressed easily with the “lab feel” of their classes, but I have seen results with the products I have been using.
I am sure that Paula has had customers not satisfied with her products and customers who react to ingredients in her products.
We all have to choose what WE decide is right for our skin. Paula’s reviews are not the answer for everyone. Just like Dermalogica is not for everyone.
JMHO,

I have used Dermalogica over the years and while I have not used this product, I have to say their intense moisturizer and moisturizing cleansers are some of the best I have ever used. But perhaps I just succumbed to the hype of my salon? Just recently I found a generic of Olay Regenerist at CVS – and it has become my new favorite moisturizer at a fraction of the cost. Thanks Beauty Brains!

Julia,
I am kind of confused: What are Dermalogica’s moisturizing cleansers? What was the intense moisturizer you used? Did you use Intensive Moisture Balance? I find that too heavy and usually recommend Active Moist for my drier clients.
But as for the cleansers, I have never been versed in anything that is considered a “moisture wash.” That would be fruitless, as you need moisture to stay on the face and not be washed away.
buenos dias,
Lynnette

Thanks for the answer Left Brain! I had been trying out Dermalogica’s products, but found everything rather underwhelming. Everything made me break out, and my skin was more irritated than usual. I will definitely not be shelling out the money for this product, or any other Dermalogica product, for that matter!

I do love Dermalogica and for me its less the hype and more the fact they use such natural ingredients. Who knows whether they’ll actually do exactly what they say(!) but I think people have to choose something that reacts well to their skin and i have found D to be really good. I really like the special cleansing gel and the daily microfoliant. The place I get them is really non-hypey too and pretty good value. Link is below if anyone is looking for products:
