Great article! There is nothing wrong in wanting to permanently relax your curls but there is no such thing as doing it with a 'natural relaxer" no such thing. You can use product as Hair mask or deep conditioner (Botanical Spirits Peppermint Mud Hair Softening Mask) that can either be herbal or cream base to gradually relax curly hair thus increase manageability which will revert back to normal once treatment is stopped. But it really is irritating when I see or hear about products that clearly have strong chemicals in them, that will permanently change the hair structure and thus called 'natural relaxers". However on a technical scientific term everything out of nature is natural and is also a chemical (with chemical composition) but the real question we need to ask ourselves is; what are the short and long term effects or damages. Is taking care of our hair with products of no harsh ingredients, with positive gradual results more important to us? Or using harsh chemicals for quick results that will require higher maintenance if we want to maybe avoid suffering great damages down the line. So the more inform you are the more you'll be equipped to make better decisions about your beauty products and not fall for so called “Natural Relaxers”.

@ dcbearden

sorry but i do not agree with relaxing or ANY chemical processes on childrens hair.

My mother did not have afro hair it was more european mix, hard to explain the type of hair she has. But she NEVER relaxed my hair she hated combing it, that was a decision i made for myself to relax it when i was aged about 14.

NO ONE I REPEAT NO ONE in my family has ever relaxed their childs hair whether it was the coarsest or otherwise of textures.

i feel sorry for any child that has to go through the BURNING sensation or losing hair, or losing hairline, and damaged hair etc.

Leave the child's hair alone, learn to plait it and understand about caring for her natural hair, she'll thank you for it later. and leave the decision to her when she is old enough to choose for herself what she wants and understand the implications of whatever she chooses to do with it and she will learn to care for it herself.

Im 22yrs old (black woman) and have had a relaxer since I was 14(long kinky hair). I started w/ just for me, over the yrs I used many relaxers, but for over a yr now I have been using the olive oil no-lye relaxer. I see a lot of people complain about breakage, I must say I never had that problem, I have cut my hair before and it grew back in less then a yr. People usually abuse their hair.
I suggest that people w/ relaxed hair do oil treatments and deep conditioning often, trim their hair after each relaxer and if you dont want to let your hair air dry, I would say use roller sets. I relax my hair every 3-4months And another thing is I NEVER use a flat iron.
I suggest that mothers wait to relax their daughters hair, until she knows and is responsible enough to take care of her own hair (usually a little after puberty)
Hope I helped
