I’m surprised that many people don’t comment on a major effect of high heels. They make women walk with a different, shortened stride that emphasizes the hips. I think that “sexy strut” is one of the main reasons men like the look, as well as the curve of leg muscles and changed posture. And what men like, women end up doing, whether they admit it or not

This article and most of the comments on here are extremely SEXIST and HEIGHTIST. Women are stupid to wear high heels. They cause so many health problems and actually don’t look better. I am short and am proud of being short. The fact is: short people are just better than tall ones. Why would we want to make ourselves appear tall? We are good enough as is. Boots without a heel actually look better than heels. There’s also a racist element to this. Asian people didn’t invent high heels, neither did African or Indigenous Australian and neither did Indian people. I listened to an interesting program on the radio once about the history of shoes, and what was astonishing to me was that HIGH HEELS WERE INVENTED BY WHITE MEN FOR MEN (not for women). The original usage of them was by shepherds, so that they could stand on hillsides and watch over the sheep. Then they became a royal thing, with only royal men allowed to wear them. It was only later on that women were allowed to wear them. People that wear high heels are buying into SEXIST, RACISM and HEIGHTISM.

Your formula for heels height works if you’re trying to add “overall” height, but a woman 5’4″ can have longer legs in proportion to a woman who is 5’8″!! I’m only 5’2″, but in 4″ heels, my legs look like they never end… and, the shorter one is, the bigger the impact that each extra inch makes on the proportion of one’s legs! The average leg length is 45% one’s height. If I wore 5″ heels, my legs would be 12% longer than average. I would look like I was walking on stilts… kinda like I do when I wear 4″ heels. =)
