One of the most interesting, and puzzling, questions we’ve ever had came from Tammy who tells us that for years her nails have smelled like cat urine when she files them. No matter what kind of nail file, or what brand of nail polish she uses, her nails still smell like cat pee. We don’t know WHAT to think. If anyone else has experienced this leave a comment and help Tammy out.

Couldn’t this just be the science you have taught us brains? Perhaps her nails have an unusual composition such that she breaks the disulfide bridges in the keratin that makes up her nails for some reason when she files her nails, possibly causing the odor that she perceives as cat-urine-like (although that would likely be a more ammonia-based smell, but lets not split hairs).
I suppose that’s possible but disulfide bonds are pretty strong and it wouldn’t seem like merely filing could cause a reaction. But maybe you’re on to something there.
I’m no help about why that might be the case – but I have experienced the same thing. I file, they smell, the cat gets unusually interested, then I polish and the smell goes away. ?!
All my nails smell like ammonia when filed, and have for years. Tonight is the first time I’ve tried to find out why. I never think of it when I go to the doctor. No luck so far with the internet for info, but I’m glad I’m not the only one!
My friend and I have noticed the same thing. The nails smell like ammonia when you file them- but ONLY when you file them. I think it must happen to everyone… right? Or maybe we’re just odd ones.
I have experinced the same thing. Today I decided to try to find out why. This is the closest I have come to even finding the same question. I have no idea why this happens. I’m glad I’m not alone. It’s so weird!
