I have experinced the same thing. Today I decided to try to find out why. This is the closest I have come to even finding the same question. I have no idea why this happens. I'm glad I'm not alone. It's so weird!

My friend and I have noticed the same thing. The nails smell like ammonia when you file them- but ONLY when you file them. I think it must happen to everyone... right? Or maybe we're just odd ones.

All my nails smell like ammonia when filed, and have for years. Tonight is the first time I've tried to find out why. I never think of it when I go to the doctor. No luck so far with the internet for info, but I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I'm no help about why that might be the case - but I have experienced the same thing. I file, they smell, the cat gets unusually interested, then I polish and the smell goes away. ?!

I suppose that's possible but disulfide bonds are pretty strong and it wouldn't seem like merely filing could cause a reaction. But maybe you're on to something there.
