Seems I’m the only one using Sheer Cover. I started with Bare Minerals and it didn’t work at all on my fare complexion. I looked orange!! My husband still talks about it. But, he and I both think I look great in Sheer Cover.

I am hard on makeup and expect to be able to put it on once and have it last all day. SC does. I don’t use much, however, because it will cake. And, I’m careful to avoid my eye area where, at 40, I have fine lines and the powder will settle and make me look old.

Bev March 16, 2008 at 7:14 am

I’m in my 50′s and have used a lot of makeup (think of the 60′s and the Twiggy look). I read in one of the magazines geared for my age that Neutrogena was good.

I tried it and like it and it covers the red pimples (from hormones or wine) very well.

Now I am real curious about the brands mentioned above.

Alison March 16, 2008 at 10:39 am

As a woman of color, I’ve had difficulty finding a mineral make up that didn’t leave a grayish tone. I’ve tried Bare Escentuals and recently tried Arbonne (which I love!).

Alic March 16, 2008 at 10:50 pm

I’m currently using GloMinerals, which I love the feeling of – I wonder if the really high end brands are much better than, say the Physicians Formula. The GloMinerals promo material said that one of the reasons it and Jane Irydale were better brands was because they were more finely milled. Is that the only real difference?

constellar March 16, 2008 at 11:13 pm

i am interested in an article that lets people know that many ‘mineral’ makeups are actually the same as mainstream, but with some added minerals ( such as most of those found in drugstores)

i am interested in makeup companies that do NOT use the cheap sunthetic filler of bismuth oxychloride.

i would like to see a complete review of jane iredale, mineral fusion which is found in whole foods, as well as the small but fine companies of monave, pure luxe, lumiere, fyrrinae , aromaleigh as well as any mineral makeup companies whose shades include pigments designed for women of color ( non ashy gray chalky)

i would like to kow if there are mineral makeup companies out there that offer formulas that are easy for travel ( small, compact rather than loose), strong pigments suitable for women of color and dramatic /theatrical use, and formulations that are extremely long lasting, as well as the aspect of more clean/pure and therefore more healthy.

thank you!

So many of the powdered mineral foundations become irritating to my skin over time. I’ve been using Neutrogena’s compact mineral foundation and so far so good – is there something in it that enables it to be in solid, compact form that makes it better for my skin than the powdered minerals? Do the minerals work differently if they are powdered as opposed to compressed?

rosarita March 17, 2008 at 12:10 pm

I guess I should clarify that my question, above, refers to the new compact version of Neutrogena mineral foundation and not the old one that was distributed through a brush.

I’m new to the make-up scene but bought a Bare Escentuals Bare Mineral starter kit. I enjoy it but haven’t tried anything else. I asked and was told by the sales woman that because it was all “minerals” that there was no expiration date, it wouldn’t go bad. But just a day ago as I was putting on my foundation I noticed on the side of the container “EXP 10/08″. Great! I had asked the question about expiration dates because I am not a heavy nor daily user of make up. If it has expired, what evil consequences will happen if I continue to use it?

I’m curious to learn from the Beauty Brains about any mineral company’s claim of “no expiration date”. Also the sunscreen SPF claims because perhaps I wear a lighter load of foundation than necessary to receive such SPF benefits. Additionally, in my starter kit I have the “i.d. bareVitamins skin rev-er upper”. I was told this product uses something that used to be prescription only, but they can use it in their product because (some doctor/oversight type person/agency) knows that BE wouldn’t put anything in their products that isn’t good for your skin. Sometimes I forget to put that on first, and wonder if my foundation, etc will still stay on. It does. So why use the other stuff? And what good does a ‘finishing powder’ (such as BE’s Mineral Veil) really do? I don’t always use it. In my mind it just could be more product to sell me.

I’m also curious about BE’s Platinum line. I think they also were advertising something about diamonds, but if I could afford diamonds, I’d rather wear them as jewelry rather than glitter spots on my face.
It’s great to read everyone’s comments and see the whole smorgazboard of mineral companies out there. I really look forward to your compilation on this topic Beauty Brains!

Dana March 17, 2008 at 5:03 pm

I’m interested in Glo Minerals and Jane Iredale.

Does ANY mineral makeup work for rosacea, mid-stage (mostly red cheeks and chin)?

What minerals makeups work for sensitive skin, if any?

What are the components of an excellent mineral makeup?

Liz March 17, 2008 at 5:25 pm

I’m a big fan of Mary Kay products, including their new line of mineral colors & foundations. In addtion to great quality, I also get great service from my consultant; she even calls me a few days after I buy something to make sure it’s working, and then offers to come get it from me & refund my money if I’m not completely happy. But, since I always get to try things before I buy them (with her teaching me how to use it properly), I rarely have to return anything!

Shannon March 18, 2008 at 11:36 am

I am curious about the RareMinerals Blemish Therapy; it is made by BareMinerals, and is a similar powder that you put on at night that claims to clear up blemishy skin… would it really work?

Jennfier March 18, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Please review Colorescience mineral makeup- I am a professional makeup artist and have been using it for years. It’s the best!

Belle March 18, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Please review Everyday Minerals. They are a lot cheaper then BE, and I want to know more about them. Thanks so much.

Grace March 18, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I’m interested to know if Sheer Cover works as well as Bare Escentuals (and if Bare Escentuals works as well as the brand claims).

Melanie March 18, 2008 at 5:51 pm

I have used mineral makeups for about 7 years now and in the last year have developed itchy skin with MU. I know blismuth is a problem in this regard, but what about micas. I have tried one mica free foundation from Beautyblisscosmetics.com and it looks very cakie on, but no itchiness. The best looking foundation I have found is Sterling Minerals, but again I have the itchiness even without the blismuth ingredient. I have recently found Rejuva Minerals at rejuvaminerals.com but I haven’t given them a try yet. They claim to be mica free, blismuth free, and titanium free. Please enlighten me in regards to all factors of itchiness and mineral makeups.

Rosa March 19, 2008 at 1:59 am

I’m interested in Everyday Minerals and BE Rare Minerals (night makeup???)

Nancy March 19, 2008 at 4:40 pm

MAC Cosmetics. Their mineral makeup does contain talc, which some other brands don’t. I see “no talc” being used as a selling point. Why is this?

mamacita March 19, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Interested in philosophy and Jane Iredale loose powder formulas.

Lana March 19, 2008 at 9:30 pm

First time on this site! I Love It! I tried Bare Essentuals and liked the natural glow it gave me. I got a rash, and found out it had bismuth oxide. I later found that is nickel (which I am allergic to). I looked on the comments and see that seems to be a common issue with the minerals makeup. I am in search of a minerals product that does not contain bismuth oxide. I have a catalog for Arbonne and see they offer a minerals foundation, and I am wondering if it contains bismuth oxide?! I feel the makeup should list that it contains bismuth oxide since so many people are allergic to nickel (they even mark fake silver “nickel free”). Good Luck! Thanks!

Kim March 20, 2008 at 1:34 am

I use Lumiere and love it (what’s up with silk in mineral make-up, btw?)

But I am really curious about the claims several companies have been making about how wearing mineral makeup at night is beneficial for skin.

DM March 20, 2008 at 2:29 am

I want to know about Glo Minerals. I think they’re great! They have the same micronization as Jane Iredale but more colors that blend better so you don’t end up looking like an old lady……..

BUT.. they use mica. Is there anything wrong with mica?

Kate March 20, 2008 at 12:13 pm

Mineral Fusions, please — this line has been a Whole Foods exclusive for a long time but they’re now starting to let smaller retailers sell it. I heard that the Whole Foods higher-ups loved GloMinerals but wanted something more environmentally sound, and so Mineral Fusions was born. I’d be very interested in a complete review of this line and others that claim to have high environmentally-based standards.

Hannah March 20, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Bare Escentuals – i.d. bare minerals are my fav!

Kerri March 21, 2008 at 1:00 pm

I am currently using Jane Iredale, mainly because they have pressed powder formulations. I’d love to see how it compares to other mineral makeup lines.

Patty March 21, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I’ve just started using Jane Iredale’s Liquid Minerals. I’d like to know if it’s better than the Clinique non-oily liquid foundation I’ve used for years. I chose the liquid minerals formulation because loose powders seem to irritate my sinuses (I have allergies). Thanks much!

Schansen March 21, 2008 at 8:03 pm

I am saddened that u are exploiting and toying to corrupt mineral make-up!!Mineral make-up is the future. If u are using mineral CORRECTLY it is ravishing.I use IDBare Escentuals. I don’t itch.I also use the Bare
Escen Night Treatment and it has tightened my pores! Also use PUR. U people then have an ad here for Ambien to promote sleep!! I nearly died on those drugs!!So say you about credibility. Leave mineral make-up alone.

Anja March 21, 2008 at 8:23 pm

So when do we actually get the reviews for these products??? i’d LOVE to get some make up soon, but there’s just so many! Some say use this one, some say that one. i’ve read some have things in it that make the skin itch or break out. i’m so confussed. i have very fair skin, with dark tan and orange splotches from lupus; which also makes my skin VERY sensitive. i also have huge pours and not sure how to shrink them; and combination skin at that. Which mineral make up will cover all of these things without making them even more noticable (like liquid foundation and regular powder did; i might as well have used a red marker and circled all the areas instead!), yet blend well, and be ok with my skin problems???? Should i just see a dermatologist? Anyone else have any of these problems and could recommend something? i don’t have the money to just experament. HELP!!! This is all so confusing.
Come on Girls, surely we can figure SOMETHING out!!! i don’t care what it is as long as it works well and doesn’t hurt my skin. So glad there are many of you out there, like me saying “HUH???” when it comes to all this! LOL
XXOO* ~to all.

Kerri March 21, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Oh yeah, I’d also love more info on NVEY ECO makeup. Thanks!

sammy-kay March 22, 2008 at 1:31 am

I love my Bella pierre mineral make up. The stack of colours i bought can be used dry as eyeshadow or blush, and when you dip your brush in water it turns into a beautiful shimmering eye liner or eyeshadow. when i bought it the stand was also adding the colours to a clear lip balm, lip gloss and nail polish, which made it look so versatile. I wasn’t too sure on what was acutally in the balm, gloss and polish so i didnt gte them, but the 10 colours i did get work great!!!

geraldine March 22, 2008 at 5:47 am

Hi in the uk on our shopping channel we have sheer cover .
It looks amazing but you pay £30 a month, this seems a lot of money to me. The cover seems to be down to the concealer, do all brands have this .Thanks -Geraldine

buffy March 22, 2008 at 2:56 pm

I use glo minerals – not sure how it stacks up against the rest.

Nancy March 23, 2008 at 2:52 am

I’d love to hear how AVON’s mineral makeup compares to the others. I’ve used Bare Minerals but never could get it to look good, now matter what I did. I’d like to try another but don’t want’ to waste any more money than I have to!

Thanks,
Nancy

Hey Beauty Brainiacs! I was wondering if you guys could clarify a few things about mineral makeup for me:
-First off, they say that because MMU is all-natural, you can sleep in it and it won’t clog pores. When I heard that, my BS-o-meter went off – wouldn’t the oil on your face and the powder mix together and possibly clog pores?

-Second off, I use(d) Everyday Minerals for about 4 months and found that it made me seriously oily (WAY worse than normal) – are there ingredients in MMU that can make someone more oily? (for reference, I tried using different moisturizers, as well as no moisturizer and nothing made a difference)

-Lastly, I suspect that mineral makeup is making me break out really badly. What are some ingredients that could potentially be causing my breakouts (so I can try to avoid them in the future)?

You guys are awesome, and I’m hoping you can help decode mineral makeup for me!

Tobi Kramer March 23, 2008 at 8:10 pm

interested in Mary Kay’s line of mineral makeup…but just interested in the mineral idea in general

Anne March 24, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I’ve tried California Beauty Sudden Glow and Youngblood, but I just can’t get past the shimmer. I’d like a more matte texture. I’ve also noticed a slight itch as someone above mentioned.

J March 24, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I am interested in uncoated minerals. Silicones make me break out. Most mineral products have coated zinc or titanium. Coated = silicone, and for me, that means breakouts.

Miroki March 24, 2008 at 11:39 pm

I’ve been researching into Elegant Minerals recently but I have not seen ANY reviews on it save for those on the site. Their materials are very similar to all other all natural mineral products (no bismuth, etc.) It’s much cheaper than the name/tv/infomercial brands since it doesn’t spend money on promotions. They have AMAZING sample special offers so I think I may give them a try. I’m only hesitating cause of discovering Silk Naturals, and I’m wondering if the inclusion of silk may be better for my skin…of course I realize I can buy silk powder separately too…

Heather March 25, 2008 at 10:24 am

I currently use BE. I have been hearing good things about Avon minerla makeup. I have found a website http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com, they are part of the environmental working group. This website rates hazzardess igredients in products. I would like to know which mineral makeup is the best buy for pricing, coverage, correction or “healing”, and hazzard ratings. I would like a well rounded produst that is not tested on animals also. If there is such a product out there.

Marlena Burger March 26, 2008 at 7:56 am

I am 57 years old and I am considering using the Loreal product but are these Bare Minneral products just for the younger skin ? I would like to know from someone that has used it, in my age catagory.

Cate March 26, 2008 at 8:08 am

How about The Secret Mineral Cosmetics. I was in the mall the other night and had them use their foundation on me. It looked nice except where she tried to cover some acne and then it looked caked. The following morning my face was so dry in that area. Apparently you can use the face colors for all your make-up needs–blush, eyeliner, shadow, mascara, even nail polish. They have a primer to make it waterproof. I tried looking them up online–but found nothing

Steph March 28, 2008 at 2:45 pm

I’m interested in Everyday Minerals, it’s the only brand I’ve ever used and it’s fantastic as well as cheap, and that has me a bit confused. If it’s so great and doesn’t contain filler like they say, how can it be so affordable? I’m wondering if it’s not as pure as they say.

Also, I was curious which brands had Talc and if it was really as bad for you as I hear.

Marlena Burger March 29, 2008 at 1:20 am

OK…I see all the questions others have listed, where are the answers to these questions. Am I missing something?

TN March 29, 2008 at 4:54 pm

I’ve been using Bare Escentuals Foundation with SPF 15. I like to know if this have enough sunblock for everyday. I like others to know if there is others brands that are just as good in coverage as this one since this is one of the pricier ones. I am thinking of buying the RareMinerals Blemish Therapy 2pc Kit since I do have adult acne.

Shaina March 29, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I’ve used Aromaleigh for about six years and swear by it. My skin is extremely sensitive which is why I turned to mineral makeup in the first place, and I researched several companies before selecting Aromaleigh. I have incredibly sensitive, acne-prone skin, and this is the first line of makeup I’ve used (and I’m a beauty product junkie) that hasn’t created an allergic rash or acne breakout. The powders are talc- and bismuth oxychloride-free, and only “moist” products like some stick eyeliners and mascara contain chemicals like preservatives and fillers (a few of the moist products do contain talc, but they’re items that are used in small amounts like concealer and lash primer). Ingredients are stated clearly. My experience with color consistency has been different than a previous poster: I repurchase the foundation once per year and the color hasn’t fluctuated. The makeup stays put all day and in any weather – in fact, my makeup still looked fresh after a 14-hour excursion to Disneyland last week; also, I live on the coast where it’s humid year-round. Surprisingly, it also lasts through workouts. The makeup feels great on the skin, lightweight and never sticky or uncomfortable; because it doesn’t clog pores, it also lets skin “breathe.” Application is easy and quick and heavier or lighter coverage can be achieved simply by using different tools. The variety of colors is huge and continuously growing, and there are foundation shades for all skin tones and ethnicities. For those who are in between offered shades, extensive guidelines for mixing two or more shades to get the right color are given on the website. You can buy generous, inexpensive samples of every item before committing to purchasing full-size items (also a great way to try mixing colors if you need to). The full-sized items are huge, also inexpensive and last a long time. Finally, Aromaleigh has great customer service. Orders ship quickly and the prices are very reasonable, and coupons, sales, and free shipping are available. The creator of Aromaleigh cares about and listens to her customers, and some of the reformulations of products and new items and colors have been a direct response to customer’s requests. I apologize for the long post and sounding like a late-night infomercial, but I love this stuff so much that I wanted to give detailed information!

Shaina March 29, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Just a quick Aromaleigh follow-up I didn’t mention above: customer reviews of each product are available and encouraged on the website. To J, both uncoated and coated formulations of the foundation powder are available. To Marlena, L’oreal doesn’t offer bona fide mineral makeup products – their products have added ingredients, like talc and aloe, whereas the “true” mineral makeup companies formulate their powders completely of minerals like titanium dioxide and finely milled mica. My 53-year-old mother uses mineral makeup (Aromaleigh and occasionally Bare Escentuals), and she loves it and looks fabulous!

Marlena Burger March 30, 2008 at 3:02 am

Thank you Shaina for this informative right-up and your extensive research on the subject. Marlena

lynn March 30, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Revlon Color Stay Mineral Powder is the worst I have ever tried. Poor coverage and the little black bristles from the brush come off all over your face. Sure, it’s not expensive and I found out why!

Bernadette March 30, 2008 at 1:42 pm

I am interested in Bare Minerals’ claim that it is water-resistant and sweat-resistant. I sweat regularly on the tip of my nose and my upper lip and I want to know if Bare Minerals looks splotchy after sweating.

EMiriamD March 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I forgot to add La Bella Donna to my list. If I’m not mistaken this was one of the very first–if not The First–mineral makeups to arrive on the scene, probably at least ten years ago. In NYC I remember it was initially an exclusive at Takashimaya and then moved over to Bergdorf’s. Apparently it’s now only available online. It comes in loose and pressed forms, which some folks find especially convenient.
