Nicole,
OMG... I had the worst experiences when there and one in London.
The second we went outside Gare du Nord, we were hit with the gypsies. My son and his girlfriend went a few weeks before we did and they warned us and told us what to do.
The next stop was naturally the Sacre Cour... the riff raff outside that church was unbelievable! There were a band of French-Jamaican guys trying to make bracelets and grabbed Pat's hand. I was SO on my toes and had Pat been wearing a watch, it would have been gone!
Honestly, I found Paris to be very dirty. Outside the Gare Du Nord were many homeless who made their homes on the benches and behind all around the building. No one could even sit down. There were many rifle carrying cops all over the station. It was very intimidating.
It was clean around the Louvre, Notre Dame and the EIffel Tower, but I was not impressed about the whole Paris experience.
We had a very close call in London. I was so mentally exhausted by the time we got to Newark Airport I cried all the way home. I was never so glad to be on American soil.
Our son went to London and Paris a month before we did and he said the same thing about Paris.
I think if we did a tour and not walked all over the place we would not have seen what we did. BUT, we did not, we were on our own and saw more than I wanted to! The hotel was a four *!! OMG, if that was a four star, I would hate to see their bargain ones. I think my daughter did much better staying at hostels through France and Italy! That may be the way I do it next time!
I am glad your experience was much better. I just say Dorothy was right--there's no place like home! USA!!
buenos dias,
Lynnette

Hey Lynnette--

I know you addressed your comments to Sarah, but I was shocked at them, so I just had to respond. Not like Paris? Sacrilege! lol

I loved, loved, LOVED Paris. If I could move there today, I am 95% sure that I would. I felt safe with the police, and though I've heard stories about the people begging, I was fortunate not to experience them being too intrusive. Just begging like the people beg here in the U.S.

I'm ready to expatriate. Just trying to figure out how to make a living, get my pet birds cared for, and what to do with my stuff!

Sarah,
Did the rifle toting police feel a bit intimidating? Did you venture outside and get bombarded by the gypsies? Once there was enough for me!!! I kissed the ground when we got back home. Dorothy was right--there is no place like home!

That's it!! Gare Du Nord in Paris.

I made a quick stop over in Paris and took this photo from the second floor overlooking the first floor action.

See if you can guess the next one.
