Sarah Bellum Says:

Last week the Right Brain blogged about a study that supposedly reveals the real reason why women wear makeup. We posed some of the questions from the study and asked you to give us your answers. Not surprisingly, these questions generated a lot of comment and controversy from the Beauty Brains community. In today’s post I’m going to talk about the results of the test and how your scores compared to those from the research.makeup

For each question the researchers summarized the data by adding up the “agreement ” scores (all Slightly Agreed or Strongly Agreed answers). Based on the psychological profile that went with the survey, they put the women into one of two different categories depending on how strongly they agreed with the statements. (Don’t you love it when researchers put people into buckets like that??) These psychological profiles differentiate women based on whether they use makeup for camouflage or for seduction.

I find it hard to believe that our psyches are really that black and white, but it is kind of interesting to see how our Beauty Brainac scores compare to these categories. You can look at each question and based on how strongly you agree, you can guess which category you belong in. Sounds like fun, huh? Here we go:

Question 1: When I’m made up I feel glamorous

Camouflage personality type: 25% agreed

Seduction personality type: 63% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 65% agreed

Comment: Looks like we’re all sluts and we’re going to burn in hell. (Oops, just kidding!)

Question 2: With makeup I want to smile.

Camouflage personality type: 14% agreed

Seduction personality type: 47% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 35% agreed

Comment: The BB’s score was sort of in between Seduction and Camouflage.

3. I make myself up in a more intense way in the evening

Camouflage personality type: 57% agreed

Seduction personality type: 92% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 60% agreed

4. Without makeup I’m insipid

Camouflage personality type: 76% agreed

Seduction personality type: 55% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 15% agreed

Comment: Who’s going to agree with this one, no one wants to be insipid!

5. When I’m made up I want to allure

Camouflage personality type: 48% agreed

Seduction personality type: 67% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 45% agreed

Comment: Come on gals, we’re losing seduction points here! Spritz on some Allure!

6. A woman who does not make herself up is a woman who over rates intellectual dimension to the detriment of appearance.

Camouflage personality type: 24% agreed

Seduction personality type: 10% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 0% agreed

Comment: If a lower score means we’re more seductive, we must be smokin’ hot on this one!

7. I use makeup to control the image of myself.

Camouflage personality type: 48% agreed

Seduction personality type: 59% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 40% agreed

Comment: We scored less than camouflage - does that mean it’s time to Go Commando?

8. Without makeup I don’t feel like myself.

Camouflage personality type: 62% agreed

Seduction personality type: 33% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 20% agreed

Comment: Again, we’re hyper-seductive.

9. I don’t like my face without makeup.

Camouflage personality type: 76% agreed

Seduction personality type: 47% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 25% agreed

10. I always make myself up when I’m going to be in contact with other people

Camouflage personality type: 95% agreed

Seduction personality type: 61% agreed

Average Beauty Brainiacs Score: 35% agreed

Comment: Our scores are so much lower than the Camouflage group - I guess that means that the Left Brain didn’t vote on this one!

The Beauty Brains bottom line

So there you have it. I’m no psychologist but I’d say the Beauty Brains community doesn’t rely on makeup for camouflage. That must be because we all have VERY high levels of self-esteem. Or maybe we’re all a bunch of super-seductresses. Or maybe a little bit of both?

What do YOU think? DId your answers put you into the Camouflage or Seduction category? Do you agree with the study’ s results? Leave a comment for the rest of the super-seductresses, uh, I mean the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

cant you be in both categories? using makeup for both camouflage as well as seduction. I think I am, I mean, I use it as camo to cover my zits and dark circles and I use it seductively to blacken and lengthen my lashes, and to make my lips look fuller and sexy.

if a person is solely using it for camo, then they would only use the concealer, and the foundation, and the powder,…..and if they were only using it for seduction, then they would only be using the eyeshadow, and liner, and blush, and lipgloss or lipstick

  2. Terry Says:

For me makeup is a way of life. Camo and seduction are second nature to me. When I wake up in the morning I head for the coffee and the makeup mirror at the same time. I have worn makeup so long I don’t know myself when I look in the mirror in the morning. With that being said I guess I am a hopeless camo type of girl.

  3. Joyce Says:

Maybe I’m part of the minority who use makeup solely for camouflage. I have acne and scars so my face seems smooth after I apply makeup. When I go out, I usually apply only liquid foundation.

It’s only when I have a big event that I use lipstick and eyeliner. But it’s only for me to blend in and not look out of place.
