Shiney Says: Can coconut oil grow my hair long?
Mid Brain’s slick reply:
The Beauty Brains previously wrote that coconut oil was one of the few oils that could actually penetrate hair and provide great conditioning. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to help your hair grow longer. Except for a few approved drugs and laser treatments, there is nothing that’s been demonstrated to increase hair growth.
That depends mostly on genetics.
What have you tried to get your hair to grow long? Did you think it worked? Leave a comment below.

Wait, if the oil can penetrate the shaft, that means it can strengthen/condition the hair, right? And doesn’t this mean that your hair could get longer than if you didn’t use oil since your hair might not break as often (therefore contributing to overall length)? Maybe I misunderstood your previous post.
Oh and in this comment, by long, I mean nothing to do with how fast it gets long which wouldn’t change.
When I use coconut oil I dont feel it lengthens the hair but it does give it volume. Maybe that contributed to the myth.
Oh this is a bad news, I though that coconut oil helps in growning hair so I decided to apply it to my lashes everyday and it makes my lashes really thicker but I cannot notice any length. And it makes my eyes blurry!
@Rosa – That theory is correct. Hair does have the potential to get longer if you’re conditioning with coconut oil. But there is nothing special about coconut oil. As long as you use a hair conditioner the same would be true.
I thought that coconut oil helps in lengthening hair. So I started applying coconut oil regularly although my hair looked dull.
I worked in a hair salon for almost 7 years and the only WAY to grow your hair is through stimulation and simple maintenance. Meaning, massaging the scalp with a brush or working out at the gym, exercises like so help increase hair growth. Another point factor in growing hair is getting your ends trimmed EVERY month. Split-ends play a huge part in hair breakage. Just remember, the more split-ends you have means the more hair they have to cut. Lastly ladies, keep chemical treatments down to the bare minimal. I had to sacrifice color to get relaxers (and I only get relaxers once a year).
yer it does i tried it about a month ago and now my hair is down at my waist well i gues it is the different hair types the oil reacts to.
hair is dead skin cells. growth rate changes/depends on what you eat, stress and hormones. ive noticed that my hair seemed to grow faster when i had extensions tugging at it alot. but it didnt break as much either, which contributed to volume. volume, body, and length are different.
* hair didnt break because it was corn-rowed, but that damaged it.
i have had my hair very long before and then i cut it off so now its very sahort all i know to do is eat fruit and use GARNIER LENGTH AND STRENGTH SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER but i need more answers please help!!
What i do to make my hair grow longer, faster is eat lots of lean protien and a multivitiman every morning.i also never over brush my hair, and i get my sister or best frind to trim it to make sure the minimal amount is trimed off. also when you use condetioner DON’T rub it in to your scalp it clogs your hair foilicule and provents it from growing.
ya, i thought Coconut oil is very helpul for increase hair growth
yes i agree
Definitely,Coconut oil helps for increase hair growth, gives extra shine for hair.now days I using coconut oil.As It is very helpful for me.
Most black hair care products use alot of hydroginated versions of natural oils coconut incluided….are they as effective? and at the very least are they safe for relaxed hair?
Id also like to mention that i think its a shame black hair care companies use petrolium and mineral oils AS THE BASE OF THERE hair and skincare products. PRODUCTS ( always at the top of the list of ingrediants?)
These ingredients are of the same family as the gas u put in your car and are 100% incompatible with skin and hair.
all it dose is coat the serface, it canot be absorbed into skin or hair and bloks pores causing slowed hair growth and premature skin aging.
Why do they use it then? becouse it cost them ALOT less to make! all this time they have been selling lies that promise healthyer hair when your litterally getting a jar of vaceline (petrolium) or baby oil (mineral oil) with a coupple dros of the good stuff so they can legally market it to you…
Do yourself a favre and demand better treatment – be a smarter shoper and ACTUALLY take care of your hair by swithching to products that either dont contain them at all or contain so little that its at the bottom of the list.
if every one gets smart black women can demand more from the companies who take our money if we all request products made of ingredients thatare actually good for us they will eventualy have to make them!
Stop bying into fancy gimmicks and check for yourself how far down the list the silk proties, good oils, etc are- if there at the end the company is lying to you.
my hair is up to my butt ever since i started to applly it. i think it works and u should try it!!
don’t believe that coconut oil will make hair grow longer, but using it helped save my hair from the worst ravages of the sun when I was travelling in SE Asia and India. It also smelled and felt fabulous!
hey. my name is lily and i am 12 years old. I recently got my hair chopped to bout right above the shoulders. My old hair was about 2-3 inches over my shoulder. my new haircut has many layers, which makes it high matniece. With my old haircut i didnt have to straighten it EVERYDAY ! so, just asking. any good suggestions about what to do to MY hair to make it grow longer. I dont have very greasy hair and i wash it every other day. Shampoo and condition. I think it is all the layers that make it soooooo frizzy ! i had layers on my old haircut but not so high uo and as many ! Thanksssss sooo much for anyone who will help me. just email me !
Hiya..ive been using jojoba oil in my hair and it works wonders..Its says its 100% pure but it is mixed with sweet almond oil..Also im using sofnfree n pretty GroHealthy childrens hair products..None of the products contain petrolium or mineral oils. Im using shea butter repair treatment and the olive oil creme conditioner..and ive found that it makes my hair really soft and feels healthy..I put the jojoba oil in my hair then the shea butter treatment or the olive oil conditoner on every night and cover my hair with a silk cap then in the morning I spritz with a leave in conditioner and brush with a natural bristle brush..
I agree that gentle hair care will help hair grow longer, if not faster. Oil helps many folks, like me, as does conditioner, using shampoo only on the scalp, a silk or satin (nothing fancy) pillowcase, seamless combs…the list goes on.
However, I don’t agree that only laser treatments and drugs help hair growth. My dermatologist, who is very respected and a Mayo graduate, recommended B-vitamins and extra biotin (5 mg oral, not topical) and said that there was good evidence for that. In my experience, it has absolutely helped my hair and nails grow much faster, and I know other folks who swear by it. Also, a vitamin deficiency or poor health impedes hair growth–I had low-normal iron stores (not uncommon) and that was impeding growth and making my hair fall out. So certainly fixing health problems can help–especially subclinical problems that fly under the radar screen (like low-normal iron stores.) In general, I just think good health–multi-vitamins, exercise, diet–help you hair achieve its full potential, both in terms of quality and growth rate.
I do scalp oiling/massage, too, and I am not sure if that really affects my hair growth, but my scalp is certainly healthier for it and that can’t hurt.
That’s all! Thanks!
I do have long hair, about maybe 8 inches past my shoulders, though it grows longer in the middle. I’ve used nearly every hair care product that isn’t too expensive. I do like Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner, yes it’s mainly for horses, but is safe enogh for human hair and the website http://www.manentail.com/home2.asp
has shampoo, conditioner and other hair care products designed strictly for people, even african american hair. I have seen some hair growth to my hair using this and I’ve also used every long hair shampoo + conditioner I know of,even Dr. Miracle’s product for black women’s hair says “Feel your hair growing.” It has a cinnamon scent and extract and other ingriedents to stimulate the stubborn hair to grow. Plus it tingles and makes yor scalp feel cool. Right now I’m using Pantene Beautiful Lengths 2 in 1 shampoo +conditioner, my opinion anything with panthenol (pro-vitamin B5)most likely will stimulate hair growth. Other products that I use that have panthenol are Suave mousse (pink can) that contains soy protein also.
Coconut oil is a miracle oil. Good for dandruff and eczema, even athlete’s foot. It’s a wonderful hair and skin conditioner. It is indeed a special oil. Better to cook with then butter or other oils too. It will help you retain length because it will hold the moisture in your hair taking away the dryness. I use it in my hair, on my face, on my husbands feet too. It is good for diabetics also. If you want long hair, start with coconut oil in it every day. Yes, I am a hairstylist also.
Well i have to tell you all that the cocnut oil used not only everyday but also as a pre-wash conditioner, works wonders for the hair..Also, hair vitamins like hairfinity and exotic allure WILL make your grow like you would’nt believe…some advise? Please use a all natural shampoo and conditioner..your hair will grow,Guranteed!!
OKay… Here is the thing
COCONUT OIL CAN INCREASE HAIR GROWTH !!
all these people saying it wont do not have enough knowledge, hair salons or hair dressers tell u NO because they want u to buy this and that product are just trying to get more money out of you..
I lived in India for 6 yrs..and lived in the middle east most my life..the only thing women there use to grow their hair is coconut oil..along with suns heat it makes a great treatment for the hair AND scalp..NOW i understand that in places like Canada u dont get regular heat, BUT what you can do is .. put pure coconut oil in your hair..not alot..just massage your scalp with it..and sit in the sauna for 10-15 min each day or atleast 3 times a week…and ull see the difference..if you dont have a Sauna, you can wrap your head with a thin towel and either hot box your shower and sit in it..or blow dry the towel for heat..
It DOES NOT WORK THE SAME WAY AS A CONDITIONER since coco oil is PURE..conditioner loosens up your hair roots if used on the scalp..therefor your hair easily falls off.
Trimming is good regardless…even more so if you bleach or straighten your hair..
I am in Med-school right now, and I have done this experiment for my thesis. So you people can either listen to the FACTS thats been PROVEN or what some random person says just to sound smart.
Sara where can you find coconut oil, to make your hair grow?
Just bought beachcomber budds pure coconut oil while in Hawaii. Love Love it. Use it on my skin and hair often, I have very dry hair and skin. It makes the dryness from living in upstate new england, soft.
Yes, coconut oil does stimulate the hairs growth follicles.
I’m currently working in a Salon where we ONLY USE natural products! One of our treatments is a coconut oil treatment.
People literally come back twice a week to have this done! Or they end up buying it and doing it at home.
First we take the coconut oil, bring it to a liquid ( It’s a solid at room temp) massage the oil on the clients crown focusing on the roots then we bring it down to the ends. Next we take a heated towel and wrap it around their head. Wait 30-45 minutes; wash the clients hair with all natural shampoo containing egg whites and coconut oil. They either can blow dry it or let it air dry.
To pj..
What do you mean your hair got down to your waist..How did that happen..Is it coconut oil that did that.
i used to have SUPER SUPER duper thick hair that couldnt really be grapsed with both hands. now u can graps it with a couple of fingers. ive been told coconut oil helps. but WHEN would u see results??? lol…god i just want THICKER hair, growth raite doesnt bother me..
I think people are confusing ‘retaining length’ with ‘growth aid’.
if you want to grow your hair fast, eat/consume a lot of protein every meal.
Coconut oil is everything positive that the previous users have stated. I suffered hair loss and breakage due to stress. My beautician trimmed my ends and recommended using coconut oil daily. I also started using Purvana, hair, skin, and nail vitamin from (Health Food Store), and my hair is growing and thicker. The vitamin contains ingredients increase, strengthen, and maintain the hair. It Works! I have been using it for 30 days in combination with the coconut oil.
i’ve used coconut oil as a hair mask and face mask a few times over the last month and my hair feels so thick and nourished now. and also i’ve had a couple of comments about how fast my hair grows. it does seem to be growing faster but its early days and i’m not sure… definately a good conditioner though.
Anyway Guys, I’m gonna try my coconut oil right away.
And soon I’ll let you know.
Do you apply the coconut oil to dry or wet/damp hair? How long do you leave it in for? Do you just rinse it out or have to shampoo and condition hair after having oil in the hair???
Heyy
. i bought normal olive oil today for my hair, would olive oil help hair growth too? im gunna try and find cocunut oil soon but i wanna know if olive oil would increase hair growth?
thankyoou =) x
First of all my comment is that this “Beauty Brains” article is false and misleading, and a intelligent person would either know this already, and read the comments for fun like me, or read the comments and find a selective few that is completely helpful and accurate about ORGANIC ONLY coconut oil. It IS a great help to the hair.
To the author: This statement “That depends mostly on genetics.” should have you in court and this website shut down immediately for that.
‘IN NO WAY DOES HAIR GROWTH DEPEND ON GENETICS’
LYING HATEFUL B~~~~..
What the people say about natural is definately true. When something is sourced and produced PURE-either 100 % or a ratio mixed with something else natral thats equally as beneficial, THEY WORK! To be even surer of what you are buying, look for certified organic as then you can be totally sure that you are not being ripped off, contributing to poor working conditions, or buying things with
harmful or crappy chemicals- remember, things with silicones will always weigh your hair down, e.t.c
Burt’s Bees have some great shampoo’s- a bit pricey ( especially if you live in the u.k! ) and you have to do your home work as to which work for you, and many others not so pricy.
There are so so many nat. things that work, take/treat away acne, wrinkles, dry skin etc and some of these are actually caused by chemicals in products. You don’t have to buy organic-just make sure to avoid stuff such as parabans, glycerin (unatural) alcohol, sls, and so on.
Girls, remember coconut oil is not for growing eye lashes and eye brows . The best oil ever for these 2 things is CASTOR OIL . the thick one!
you buy it and put it everyday on your eyelashes. My friend was burned with her oven onetime that she lost all of the hair on her eyes and brows, so the doctor recommended her to use castor oil every night . After a month she was so happy to see hair started growing amazingly. There is no other castor oil for eyelashes its amazing
oh i forgot to mention massage your scalp only with castor oil and rinse it in the morning , IT IS THE BEST TO GROW AND STRENGTHEN HAIR !
That’s not true, I use the scalp watering technique for my natural hair everynight and my hair has grown 1 1/2 inches in 17 days. I use spring water, and some oils on my scalp nightly, it really works!
Wow! I am soooo late on this coconut train! I just discovered coconut oil this summer from a GUY subtenant who is from India. lol!
I was a bit dismayed, but to my surprise, WAL-MART had it in the vitamins section. $10 for a 12 oz Organic plastic tub. Perfect! There were only two left.
I’m gonna wash my hair tonight and use 1/4th a tablespoon on my shoulder-length hair. I’m using a protein treatment before, so I’m hoping the natural coconut oil will help lock in the protein before I blow dry and curl it. I’m gonna use it on my hands right now!
Sally’s didn’t have it- just some cheap petroleum jelly w/ some coconut oil mixed in… eww!!! It WAS $2.
hey,i’ve been using coconut oil in my hair since about 3weeks ago with my braids in and everything but i havn’t been noticing any change much in my hair but actually my ponytails look much much longer but will the process still proceed and how many time a day should i use it and should i do it like every 2 days or everyday or something?
There are 3 main oils that are good for hair growth – but they do not make the hair grow faster than they would in optimal conditions. They work by removing the obstacles to hair growth or they feed the root of the hair or dermal papilla of the hair a portion of what it needs to reproduce correctly.
Every cell in the body must have omega 3’s and this is why emu oil is so good along with avocado oil. Coconut oil is amazing for removing the contstraints to hair growth such as an overgrowth of bacteria or malasezzia furfur. When there is an overgrowth then extra sebum is secreted by the scalp. This attracts dirt, hair spray and other sticky ingredeints and results in fully or partially clogged hair follicle and this slows down hair growth. Jojoba oil helps to remove these blockages.
In reality the hair is made up of protein chains, that are made up of amino acids that are put together by certain minerals such as zinc and magnesium. The most important vitamins for the hair are all b vitamins including biotin and then specific minerals. For guys something to help remove the hormone build up can benefit hair growth. The most important thing is to remove the obstacles for hair growth and this means using a shampoo designed to deep cleanse the root! Look for products with “Zincplex”
