Can Shellfish Smooth Skin?

by Mid Brain on July 31, 2008

Mid Brain muses:

Recent research published in the scientific journal Lipids indicates that extracts from certain clams and mussels may be a new weapon in the fight for beautiful skin. Scientists at the Romanian University of new clam faceConstanza, obtained lipid extractions from the two organisms and showed that both were able to speed up skin healing and regeneration. According to Cosmetic Design Europe scientists believe that it is the blend of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are responsible for the beneficial effects.

No word on how soon this ingredient will make it into your moisturizer but you can bet it will cost a lotta clams.

No doubt this will become a big thing in skincare, and cost a pretty penny (love your “clams” pun). I have noticed shellfish being used in those glucosamine drinks for joint health, but not let in skincare.

I will keep my eyes open for it! Thanks MB!

Could you clarify something for me? Although I have no doubt about the results of the research, I’m always doubtful about their efficacy in cosmetic creams, which seem to be mostly water, with the active ingredients so far down the list I wonder how they could possibly be in strong enough proportions to actually do anything?

Shellfish tends to make me breakout. I’m not sure why but I’ve noticed that after I eat it I get really bad acne. The same goes for when I eat lobster. Have you ever heard of this before?
