Is Jessicurl Good For Curly Hair?

by Right Brain on August 21, 2008

Julie’s curl curious: Do the ingredients in the products sold at www.jessicurl.com really “offer a specific benefit to your curly hair,” as they claim? I’ve seen so many great testimonials for their products, but before I make a purchase, I want to make sure the claims have a scientific basis!

The Right Brain’s Jessicurl justification: curls

There’s no single specific technical approach to formulating products for curly hair. Instead, it’s all about finding the right balance. Here are 3 things to look out for:

Amount of Conditioning

Some women want lighter weight conditioning that won’t rob their fine, thin hair of curls. Others need heavier conditioning to tame unruly curls.

Jessiicurl appears to offer shampoos for both ends of the conditioning spectrum with their Gentle Lather Shampoo and Hair Cleansing Cream. Their Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner is based on shea butter which is an excellent emollient for skin but it’s not substantive to hair. While it provides a catchy name for the product, it does little from a rinse out application.

Level of Hold

Jessicurl’s styling products include Confident Coils Styling Solution which is built on a fairly standard backbone of polymers including vinyl pyrrolidone and Vinyl Acetate. These provide a nice, firm hold but are not very humidity resistant. Her inclusion of magnesium sulfate is an interesting addition because of the texture and crunch it can give to curly hair. However, it won’t be very long lasting because this kind of film is relatively easy to disrupt.

Sensory Styling

Suprisingly, her Rockin’ Ringlets and Gelebration spray are based on flax seed extract which we have not seen used in styling before. This ingredient will not give long lasting hold but it could provide a very different feel and texture to the hair.

The Beauty Brains bottom line

If you’re a curly queen and you’re haven’t had luck with mass brands and salon products, you might give Jessicurl a try. While there’s no breakthrough technology here, these products could deliver a different look and feel for your curly hair. Based on our review of their ingredients and the benefits they claim, we’d say this is worth a shot.

A year ago I became a naturally curly convert, and I have sampled and tried several products based on recommendations from the Naturally Curly website.

I absolutely love Jessicurl, not only does my hair respond well with her products; I love her approach to hair care. Her demonstration videos are easy to understand and highly informative. A little styling product goes a long way, so follow her instructions and enjoy your hair. Personally, I love her Island Fantasy scent!

Jessicurl does work. I am 59 and this is the first time ever, that I now know how to work with my hair for beautiful, defined but not greasy or sticky curls. Her methods may be even more important than her products. Watch the video and just try the methods including “plunking” and non-use of terrycloth towels, etc. it works!

I used the jessicurl weekly deep treatment and it worked wonders for my hair. I couldnt believe it was my hair at all after washing it out. It defined my curls and my hair looked like it never had before. I was skeptical of using her products because it thought they wouldnt work on my 3c, mostly 4a and probably a little 4b hair but it did. It also worked on my moms hair which is mostly 3c. I wish it did something for shrinkage but other than that i couldnt be more happy. I will continue to use this. I do think her customer service sucks though. if i find a deep conditioner that moisturizers and defines my curls AND reduces shrinkage ill use that one over this because of jessicurls poor customer service.

I was quite disappointed with the review. I know that I work for Jessicurl, but I can say with 100% honesty that these are the best hair care products I have EVER used. I used to hate my hair. I spent many years trying to tame it, flatten it, wet it down, pull it back and smash it down. Now, after a 15 minute hair routine in the morning, I have big, beautiful, bouncy curls all day. Granted, I still wear a ponytail to keep it out of my face when needed. I wish I knew who ‘lala’ was so I could contact her. I see that her post is quite old, but I would love to know what happened with her personal experiences that would lead her to say that the customer service sucks. I know that I personally do everything I can to make sure the customer is happy, and we have a great customer service team now.
