Tammy bat me to it - any salon worth their salt has a water softener installed and MOST regions of the country have water that is quite hard (I am lucky to live in a soft water area!) and thus the hair feels and behaves very different, and so does the product as you guys well know. I would go so far as to say that is the BIGGEST difference in the way a product behaves and less to do with application or anything else. If it's really the exact same product and just isn't working as well at home I'd ring up the salon and ask if they soften their water.

I sometimes wonder if it's the blow dryer my stylist uses. I'll never know for sure, as her blow dryer costs $300.

I would add that the softness or hardness of the water can make a big difference. If the salon has softer water than you do at home, it will make your hair feel smoother and silkier.
