Is Applying Sunscreen At Night Bad For You?

by Right Brain on October 9, 2008

Jamie Wants To Know:  I recently bought a new moisturizer which contains SPF. Is it alright to use this as a Night and daynight cream as well? Will applying SPF to your skin day and night cause any harm? Or should I just go get myself a night cream?

The Right Brain Says:
Applying an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) cream to you skin at night versus during the day won’t make any difference.  Any cosmetic CAN be irritating if you have very sensitive skin, but if you’ve used the product during the day and it’s ok, you won’t have any problems at night.  At least your face won’t have problem. Your bank account might because SPF products tend to be more expensive!

The Beauty Brain’s Bottom Line:

There’s nothing wrong with applying sunscreen at night but if you invest in a good night cream without SPF, you’ll save some money.

Is it just me, or does it seem like most of the time my moisturizers with SPF just aren’t as moisturizing as ones without? I’ve been using separate sunscreen and moisturizer for this reason, but if I found one that could do both, I’d be in business!

Thanks for asking this, Jamie! I’ve been wondering the same thing lately, since money’s limited and I don’t want to buy two lotions!

Actually, I don’t recommend using a moisturizer with SPF at night.
When we sleep, our body goes into a “recovery” mode, which means any moisturizers applied to skin works much better. Sunscreen prevents moisture from penetrating the skin, therefore reduces the effects of your products. So, when you use a moisturizer at night with SPF, it works less than one without.

I’ve never heard of the idea that sunscreens prevent moisture from penetrating the skin. Do you have a scientific study that you could refer us to?

There are a lot of moisturizers with SPF. If what @Ana says is true…
