Mid Brain Declares…

Happy Mole Day!

In case you didn’t realize, today is Mole Day.  It’s a day to celebrate the famous and ever-so-important (to chemists anyway) constant, Avogadro’s Number.  The number, 6.022 * 10 ^ 23, is a basic unit of measure in chemistry and represents the count of particles in a mole of a material.   You can learn more about it at the National Mole Day Foundation’s website.

Here’s how this cosmetic chemist is going to celebrate.  I’m going to put 18 grams* of water in a beaker and say the unofficial Mole Day pledge.

“I pledge allegiance to the mole, and to the science from which it comes, one SI unit, extremely divisible, with micromoles and millimoles for all.”

Mole day is a part of the larger National Chemistry Week celebration by the American Chemical Society.  See their website for activities in your area.

*18 grams of water = 1 mole of water

Happy Mole Day! I’m not actually doing anything this year, but truth be told, I’m a little more excited about Pi Day. Mmm, pie…

Our ACS section is having a Chemistry for Kids event on 11/8.

I always thought that Mole day was on June 22nd. (6-22). I’m sad that I missed it, because I could have brought cookies shaped like moles (the animal kind XD) to my organic chem lab.

*laugh* At first, since this is a beauty website (having forgotten momentarily that it’s actually the beauty BRAINS website) I was thinking that mole day is to celebrate our birthmarks, our hyperpigmented lesions, and our freckles. Then I saw the picture of the little gray rodent and was confused as to what beauty brains has to do with furry little creatures. Then I finally read the text.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane back to high school chemistry class.

  5. Random Cosmetic Chemist Says:

I celebrated by counting to 602,200,000,000,000,000,000,000
