Oh, there's a reason why I got OUT of corporate marketing and into nonprofit. It's still a culture shock to me to have my boss tell me that I can't talk about a signed contract until the product is up and in the customer's hands. o_O At my other companies, I've created photos of products in Photoshop that hadn't even been approved to go to R&D yet.

Once upon a time in my toxicology class at uni I had a lecturer who, in an effort to ensure we understood the concept of route of absorption, debunked hysteria claims (dioxins on barbecued meat, carcinogens in clothing, you name it). My favourite example was when it came to snake venom:

If you inject 1mL of X snake venom (I really wish I remembered the species) you would have no chance of survival, probably even with immediate treatment.

If you swallowed a shotglass of X snake venom, so long as you don't have stomach ulcers or other problems, you'll have an upset stomach but otherwise be okay.

If you stuck your arm in a vat of X snake venom, provided you didn't have cuts or grazes that hadn't begun healing, you would experience no side effects whatsoever.

Apparently HIS lecturer demonstrated this with a small jar of venom provided by the biology wing and put his hand in it every year. But they also went through benzene in the labs like it was phenol when my lecturer was a student, so who knows.

You're not far off Janis. I've actually been in brainstorming meetings where something similar to this happens.

Sometimes I'm convinced people invent things because they have a cool name for it. "We should make something from snakes. We could call it Syn-ake?"

"Syn-what? What the hell's that?"

"Syn-AKE. Like synthetic snake. Seriously. It'd be cool."

"So what do we use?"

"Snake pee. Snakeskin. Snake venom, snake vomit, whatever. Who cares? Snake something. We've got the graphics people working on logo and packaging already."
