Beauty Science or BS Poll 35 – Answers

by Mid Brain on January 7, 2009 · 6 comments

At long last the answers to another Beauty Science or BS poll. We asked which of these four stories were fake and you took your best shot. Only 25% of you got it right. Here are the explanations.

Headlines

1. Drinking 3 cups of coffee a day can shrink your breasts
2. Flip-flop wearing can lead to higher risk of foot skin cancer
3. Mexican scientists can make diamonds from tequila
4. Women with male bosses feel more stressed than those with female bosses

Drinking 3 cups of coffee a day can shrink your breasts – TRUE

23% of you thought this was fake but it’s true. According to a survey done by coffee-breastsscientists at Lund University in Sweden, there is a link between drinking coffee and smaller breasts. The more you drink, the smaller they get. Of course, based on Sarah’s coffee consumption and her chest size, I’m skeptical.

Flip-flop wearing can lead to higher risk of foot skin cancer – TRUE

This one seemed the most plausible with only 10% of you predicting it was fake. Researchers out of London say that regular wearing of flip-flops significantly increases your risk of getting skin cancer on your feet. Sadly, only half of patients with this type of cancer survive.

Just make sure to wear sunscreen on your feet too!

Mexican scientists can make diamonds from tequila – TRUE

The bulk of you (42%) couldn’t believe this headline, but it’s true. Last year, a team of Mexican scientists found that by heating 80-proof tequila and depositing the vapor on a silicon substrate, they could create diamond films. But don’t look for cheap jewelry any time soon. The diamonds created from this process would be used as semiconductors in electronic.

Women with male bosses feel more stressed than those with female bosses – FAKE

Here was the fake which only 25% of you guessed right. According to this research the opposite is actually true. Women with female bosses feel more stress. Canadian researchers surveyed 1800 workers and found that women working for women experienced more instances of insomnia, heartburn, fatigue, depression and headaches. Interestingly, men didn’t report any difference in stress levels whether they had a male or female boss.

Thanks for answering. Look for a new Beauty Science or BS quiz next week.

I am not happy to read about coffee for the breast but I guess this must be true. I think moderation is the key.

I’ve only ever had male bosses, and most were so-so. One was fantastic, and one was a psychotic, red-faced screaming freakbot. So, a pretty mixed bag. The one woman I know here at my current workplace is someone I wouldn’t mind working for.

Studies like the boss one are rarely applicable in specific cases. I’ve worked for 2 female bosses and 2 male bosses. Had 2 good bosses and 2 “stressful” ones but it wasn’t related to gender.

I’m totally floored when you said drinking coffee can reduce breast size. I wonder what beverage will make my breast larger?
