Jennifer has an unusual problem..I highlighted my hair and recently had my roots done. I use a Bio-ionic blow dryer and curling iron a few times a week. I just noticed last night that the ends of my hair are turning pink!!! Oddly enough, one of the pair of silver colored hoop earrings that I often wear is also turning pink. This may be due to tarnish and unrelated to the hair turning pink but I can not figure out for the life of me why my ends are turning pink!! Can you please help me?
The Left Brain Brainstorms:
From your description it’s hard to say exactly what’s causing the pink spots, but we like your earrings theory. The hair dye could be reacting with the hoops causing a metal “salt” to be left on your hair. This kind of chemical reaction (metal oxidation) can result in a pink color. (At least you don’t have a hair dye allergy or your face would be swollen and puffy.) We can’t prove this is the cause, but it does make us worried about dying our hair and wearing silver.
What can you do about it? Shampooing twice a day for a few days might help. And as a last resort, you can cut the ends off and go to Eve’s Addiction or Philip Noel for a new pair of hoops!

Can you answer the question of why a person’s hair color changes from root to tip without any interference from dye? I haven’t put any dye in my hair for at least 4-5 months, and I’ve had a haircut since. The last dye I put in was one of those “washes out in 28 shampoos”. Yet many of my hairs are gray at the root… blonde in the middle… and light brown/russett colored at the end. How is such a thing possible?
I have not colored my hair at all. Yet, the ENDS of my hair are turning blonde. My hair is naturally brown. It looks like I need my roots done. How is THIS possible if I have not colored my hair?
My hair is naturally black but is brown at the ends. The reason for this, and for Jenna’s hair, at least, (or I believe so) is because the ends of your hair are more damaged. They’re thinner, have lost or damaged alot of hair cuticle, and have lost alot of melatonin.
But that’s just my theory.

Ironically enough..the SAME thing is happening to me. I’ve noticed it off and on for the last couple of months actually. I do color my hair..but only like twice a year. However, I DO use a curling iron on a daily basis. I do not notice anything pink on my coloring iron..however, it’s the only thing I can think of that could be causing the pink. I have natural red hair..so unless I point out the pink to someone..they don’t really notice it. But in the meantime, it’s driving me insane.
I hope this helps. I have colored and highlighted hair. The other day my ends turned pink using my curling iron. It wouldn’t wash out and I had to use a magic eraser to get it out. I cleaned all of the residue from my curling iron very thoroughly and this seems to have solved the problem. Hope this is helpful and takes care of your problem. Let me know.
I am of SE Asian 100% female, 25ys. I have never dyed my hair and like to keep it natural. Throughout my life I’ve noticed that my hair has started to get red. Random strands here and there from the roots. People even say that they see streaks of red or highlights on my head at certain angles. I’m short, so I don’t see my head at angles others might. I haven’t used a curling iron in about two years and blow dry my hair about three times a year. Today I noticed that one of my black hair strand was blond! I thought it was one of my boyfriend’s hair because he has rather long hair. I tried pulling it out and realized it was still connected to my head. It was blond from the roots and black on the tip. There was no red-ish or brown between. Why does this happen? None of my family that I know has this happen. One of my sisters and grandma has curly hair. That’s the only family genes I can think of. Is it stress? Lack of sleep? …?
My (african american thick and coarse)hair changes from dark brown/blackish color to light brown/honey blonde when its overloaded with minerals and product junk. I recently switched to all kitchen remedies to clean and moisturize my hair and its back to its original color. Hope this helps!
