It seems as if Laura and I are having the same issue. I am also of SE Asian decent, 20 years of age, and some strands of my (normally black hair) are turning red at the roots. I would also like to know why this happens.

Tia It's funny you mention natural kitchen remedies. I recently discovered a blog about all kitchen remedies and they've got great insight into what to use for different problems.

You should check it out for new ideas

My (african american thick and coarse)hair changes from dark brown/blackish color to light brown/honey blonde when its overloaded with minerals and product junk. I recently switched to all kitchen remedies to clean and moisturize my hair and its back to its original color. Hope this helps!

I am of SE Asian 100% female, 25ys. I have never dyed my hair and like to keep it natural. Throughout my life I've noticed that my hair has started to get red. Random strands here and there from the roots. People even say that they see streaks of red or highlights on my head at certain angles. I'm short, so I don't see my head at angles others might. I haven't used a curling iron in about two years and blow dry my hair about three times a year. Today I noticed that one of my black hair strand was blond! I thought it was one of my boyfriend's hair because he has rather long hair. I tried pulling it out and realized it was still connected to my head. It was blond from the roots and black on the tip. There was no red-ish or brown between. Why does this happen? None of my family that I know has this happen. One of my sisters and grandma has curly hair. That's the only family genes I can think of. Is it stress? Lack of sleep? ...?

I hope this helps. I have colored and highlighted hair. The other day my ends turned pink using my curling iron. It wouldn't wash out and I had to use a magic eraser to get it out. I cleaned all of the residue from my curling iron very thoroughly and this seems to have solved the problem. Hope this is helpful and takes care of your problem. Let me know.
