Here are the headlines. All of these stories have something related to hair.  3 are real but one is total beauty BS.  Can you figure out which one?

You can vote for which you think is the fake by going to the poll on the right side of this blog.  Good luck!

I’m going to go with #4 as fake.

4? I’m not sure — I think the fertilizer and pigment ones are correct, and I imagine that “some” is enough of a catchall term to validate 2.

I’m going to go with #2 as the fake one. I think that’s biologically impossible.

WOW!! This is a tuffy. I’m going with the hair being a good fertilizer as fake. I’ve always thought hair was pretty much indestructable once it was off your head!

I think the brains have posted about the use of hair as fertilizer before. There’s a barber who uses it for fertilizer, and it can also allegedly be made into soy sauce, clothes, flooring, etc. pretty much anything.

My grandmother is 76 and only recently started to get gray hairs, so I’m thinking sure, why not 80?

I think hair color comes from just one pigment – melanin, but I’m not sure.

And I have no idea about the Asian hair one, but it seems like it would be easiest since it’s straight and thick?

I picked #3. :)

Hair color is two types of pigment — eumelanin, and something like phylo or phaelomelanin — the first is black, the second reddish.

Janis, thanks. That makes sense and explains why black hair gets reddish instead of gray when it’s lightened.

actually the brains have said before that hair color does come from 2 pigments – 2 types of melanin.

1. Hair makes a good plant fertilizer
True
2. Some 80-year-olds have no gray hair
True?
3. All natural hair colors come from 2 pigments
True
4. Asian hair is the easiest type to simulate on computers
False?

ill say #2 is false

Fake one is the plant fertilizer I say. Hair somehow seems too “dead” for that use – I don’t think it is made of living cells and mummies, for example, often have well-preserved hair. But compost is made of material that decays, right?

The other ones seem plausible/ring a bell.
