In fact, they are massively different. This happens because of the marginal value of money. The marginal value of money, or anything else, is the utility you gain when you receive an additional unit of currency/good. For the vast majority of human beings the marginal utility of money/goods/services decreases with the quantity they already have. For instance, the first cupcake you eat tastes better than the second, the second tastes better than the third, until you get full and tired of cupcakes and are ready to move onto something else. Money is similar. When you only make minimum wage finding 20$ on the street than if you make seven figures. Similarly if you only have 3$ in your pocket, finding 2$ is completely different than if you have 103$. The economic difference is not the same. The difference between marginal values is very important and relevant. That's why wealthy people don't mind paying 100$ for lunch while most people cringe at the thought of paying 20$. When you make millions, 100$ don't make a difference. When you make minimum wage, 100$ make all the difference in the world. The differences between 3$ and 5$ and 103$ and 105$ may be the same mathematically, but economically they are worlds apart. The only logic I see in this advertisement is if one was deciding to buy it anyway. If I wasn't interested in the product with this type of special, my cynicism would kick in and figure it as a marketing trick. If I wasn’t interested in the product with this type of special, my cynicism would kick in and figure it as a marketing trick.

But if I knew I was going to get the product (let’s say a favorite conditioner), it would be a boon to me to just the an extra and have it on standby until I was ready to use it.
