Left Brain reports breaking news from the UK…
Some time ago, there was a news story that reported Boots anti wrinkle cream
actually worked. This caused a run on the product and it was quickly imported to the US where it sold great. Unfortunately, a news report is hardly proof of anything so we were a bit skeptical.
Anti wrinkle study
To their credit, the Boots company didn’t stop there. According to this BBC story, they were so certain their product worked, they actually hired a university to do a double-blind, placebo controlled study to prove it. This kind of study is what pharmaceutical companies are required to do to prove new drugs work so it’s the best.
The results of that study just came out and it shows that the Boots No7 Refine and Rewind Intense Perfecting Serum actually had an effect compared to a placebo. The study showed 43% of users saw an improvement in fine lines and wrinkles versus 22% who saw an improvement using the placebo. That means…
For 1 in 5 people, this product will reduce wrinkles
The Anti Wrinkle Study
We haven’t seen the study but it will be published in a peer reviewed journal,
The British Journal of Dermatology. This is a legitimate scientific journal and should be respected. The study involved 60 participants (49 women, 11 men) and lasted for 6 months. Participants used the product each night on their hands and face. One group got the product (No7 Refine & Rewind Beauty Serum) and the other got a placebo which was the base product without the anti-aging ingredients including peptides, retinyl palmitate and lupin extract. The group that got the real product showed improved results.
Is Boots Best?
Although this study is promising, there are still a few things to consider.
1. How big is the effect? The authors demonstrate there is a noticeable effect but there’s no indication of how much. Are we talking some line reduction or major wrinkle removal?
2. Not for everyone. 43% of users saw an improvement which means 57% of users didn’t see any improvement at all. No telling who will be the lucky ones for which this product works.
3. Is it a drug? The company claims that the reason it works is because it stimulates fibrillin-1 production (a protein that promotes skin elasticity). In the US, this would fall under a drug classification because it interacts with the body’s metabolism.
4. Boots funded the study. It would be better if the funding was independent but the scientist said the paper would’ve been published no matter what the results were. This makes this Beauty Brain a little skeptical.
Beauty Brains Bottom Line
It’s not definitive, but it looks like the Boots company has demonstrated their anti wrinkle cream (Boots No7 Refine and Rewind Intense Perfecting Serum) actually has an effect for some people. And once this gets out into the mainstream American media, you can bet it will be a lot tougher to get your hands on.
Are you convinced? Are you ready to go get your Boots anti wrinkle cream? What questions do you have about the study? Leave a comment below.

i always have bad experiences at No7 stands. they don’t seem to know what peptides are (i wanted a cream with them to sooth my dry patches, and La Roche Posey with peptides really helped in the end). i would give this a go if i needed anti-aging treatments.
I am not following the math…43% saw improvements…so how does that mean 1 in 5 (20%) will have wrinkle reduction? Are you saying that half of those people would have seen results with a placebo? It seems you can only assume 22% of the 43% would have seen results with a placebo.
@Sally – The math works like this. In a group of 30 people, you’d expect ~7 (22%)people to show a response no matter what they used. In the test group of 30, 13 people (43%) showed a positive response, but you subtract the 7 that would’ve shown an improvement anyway leaving you with only 6.
Six out of 30 gives about 1 in 5 showing “real” improvement.
Where can I find the claim “the reason it works is because it stimulates fibrillin-1 production (a protein that promotes skin elasticity” in print????
@Jeff – that was quoted from the BBC story that is linked to in the beginning of this post. But the original source will be in the British Journal of Dermatology
I love Boots!
I’ve noticed a difference in my skin using a similar serum from the NO. 7 line and I love their moisturizers! I use Time Dimensions and not only have I noticed a difference in my skin, so have my close friends. Now they are hooked too!
What ever the verdict Beauty Brains or others say, you won’t know until you try it yourself
This is my first comment here , so I hope I do it — and get it — right. I wanted to start with something simple, like a health and beauty aid, and I saw my wife putting the Made from Earth – Vitamin Enhanced Moisturizer on her face this morning (as she’s done very morning for the past 20 years of our married life) and I asked her why she uses it and is so dedicated to this one particular product. She scowled a bit at me and asked, “Can’t you see why?”
Point taken.
She looks beautiful and as young as when we first met (Yes, she’s looking over my shoulder as I write this. Ow!)
But seriously, she is well on her way to 50 and (Ow!) looks fantastic. Her face is soft and nearly wrinkle-free, and many women underestimate her age which, of course, she loves.
Whatever materials are contained in it, she has obviously benefitted. But even if she hadn’t been using it, and became wrinkled (Ow!) and hard (Umf!) and aged in appearance (Yow!), I would still love her (Awww!).

Mark –
I’ve been considering trying the vitamin enhanced moisturizer from MADE FROM EARTH, but this is the first time I’ve bought it and I’m certainly not sorry I did. It has made a noticeable difference in the appearance of fine lines as well as deeper wrinkles that have developed over my 65+ yr. lifetime. It only takes a tiny bit, though – I too thought it was expensive – but since it only takes a small amount to cover your face – the bottle lasts for so long its cheaper than stuff in drug stores, without the harmful chemicals.
If you accidentally use too much, just wait about 20 minutes and wipe off the excess with a tissue. My husband is using it instead of his usual aloe and likes it, also. Most of the reveiws I read about the vitamin enhanced moisturzier seem to be younger, so I thought I’d let you older buyers know it will work for you as well.

Hey – great tips above. Thanks All! I have been using those tips and the Face Firming Serum from Made from Earth for the last two weeks, and I already see I have less wrinkes. It makes me so happy!
there are lots of creams but few of them are effective esp for those who have sensitive skin.
