Is Stress Acne Caused By The Recession?

by Right Brain on May 11, 2009 · 20 comments

Rachael ruminates…I recently broke out with a whole bunch of pimples on my face. I’ve never had a problem with zits at all.  I have fair skin and its never really been a problem. I did however start using a new foundation called Boots No7 All Day Flawless Wear, prior to the breakout.  I have since then stopped using it and nothing seems to help. Does anyone know what could cause me to breakout so bad, and what can I do for it?mona_lisa_acne_c

The Right Brain responds:

It’s really hard to say what causes any specific person to suddenly breakout. Of course heredity is important. Hormonal swings and medication changes are potential factors. Diet may also play a factor, but the jury is still out on that one. And now, according to one dermatologist, we may  have another potential pimple precursor: the global recession.

Stress acne

Stress can contribute to skin problems, so it’s not such a leap of faith to consider that the current stressful economic environment could be causing an increase in acne eruptions. That’s the theory put forth by Dr. Jeanine Downie, director of image Dermatology and author of “Beautiful Skin of Color.” Dr. Downie claims to have seen a recent increase in patients which may be due to stress, longer work days, and the economic malaise we’re all experiencing.  We’re not sure if this is recognized as a cause of acne among dermatologists in general, but it does give us an excuse to post a picture of the Mona Lisa with zits.

How To Treat Acne

As we’ve previously discussed, the Beauty Brains have seen enough data to convince us that Thermaclear is an effective anti-acne device. It’s an FDA-reviewed device that is proven to  accelerate acne healing, cutting in half the time it takes to say “bye-bye” to blemishes. ThermaClear works using patented Thermal Pulse TechnologyTM which sends heat deep under the skin and neutralizes acne-causing bacteria.

The Beauty Brains bottom line

We’re not sure if your zits are caused by economic woes, but from all the data we’ve seen Thermaclear is an effective way to treat pimples.

Stress certainly plays a HUGE role in breakouts! Stress hormone levels change and this can increase the amount of oil being secreted from the pore which can then trap dead skin and clog pores causing a breakout. However, I’ve noticed that with many clients ’stress pimples’ are deep and painful!

I suggest if you think your recent breakouts are in line with the recession, make sure to give your skin a good cleanse every night before bed and give it a boost with a drop of a serum that contains an AHA or BHA. That way your skin can get exfoliated and reap the most benefits from it while you are getting some much needed rest!

if you have really fair skin you might have rosacea. i used to have lovely skin until i reached my late 20s and then i started breaking out all over the place. particularly noticeable since i am pale. metrolotion (from my dermatologist) has helped me as well as philosophy’s hope in a jar

I soooo agree. Whenever i am stressed my skin is so awful. And when i get my period. So it makes sense that this recession would really have an effect on skin. One thing I found is this new product Frutels (www.frutels.com) which is a vitamin chocolate for acne. I know, chocolate! you wouldn’t think it, but it’s pretty amazing and says it provides all the vitamins necessary to deal with stress. And you get to eat chocolate! Which is my very favorite thing.

The clue in her question was the word:
“Fair skin.” The problem? Rosacea.
99% of Rosacea is with fair skinned people, it comes on with age and stress.
In my most stressful time, I had the
most horrible rosacea.
And ‘Thermaclear’ or any of those
‘hot shot’ machines are the worst possible answer. Heat aggravates Rosacea. Many products intended for acne irritate Roseace.

I love the beautybrainns but that oddly out of place blurb about therma-clear seems like it was written by the people who MAKE therma-clear, not the brains. How much are you guys getting paid to hock Therma-clears? Maybe the device does work to a degree but promoting a device also advertized on your website seems like a conflict of interest for a site promoting the objectivity of scientific review.

@Teddy – I agree. Sometimes Sarah goes a little over-board on the marketing promotions. However, there is some science behind the Thermaclear stuff even if it isn’t the first thing I would recommend people try. (The OTC stuff at your local drugstore is a better first option).

I’ve tried ThermaClear… I used for a few weeks and then returned it because it didn’t do anything except waste a few mins of my day everyday. I get that it should work in theory (heat kills bacteria, etc) but in practice it really isn’t effective. I have occasional breakouts which warranted this kind of product, and no cystic acne.

Thanks for your comments. I remain skeptical about ThermaClear but there is some science that demonstrates an effect.

I use psyllium in hot water every morning even though I don’t have constipation. In Pakistan, it is used for acne and it works for me. It makes sense to me because psyllium slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream=fewer insulin spikes=less inflammation and acne. I also do not drink any beverages other than water.
