Beauty Science Poll 43: Know Your Nails

by thebeautybrains on July 22, 2009 · 11 comments

It’s time for another Beauty Science poll and this time we have a theme: Know Your Nails. (I was inspired by the Right Brain’s post last week on coconut oil and nails.) Three of these statements about nail science are true; one is a clever forgery. Can you guess which one is the fake? Scroll down on the right sidebar to cast your vote. finger bubble

Which statement is FALSE?

1. Toe nails grow about 50% slower than finger nails.

2. Finger nails grow faster on longer fingers.

3. If you’re right handed, nails  grow faster on your right hand.

4. Thicker finger nails grow more slowly.

If you aren’t sure or think you know, leave a comment and get hints from the Beauty Brains community.

I’d say that #1 is false simply because I can’t think of a single reason why it would be true. *shrug*

Is Number 2 false??? Sounds false. But I’m not sure!

I say #2 is false.

See I’m going for #3. Because those fingers get used more therefore the nails should wear away faster.

The toenail thing I can believe because it seems I do trim them less often then my fingernails. And my nails grow fairly fast and I wouldn’t call my fingers long.

I’d say that #1 is TRUE because I know I don’t have to trim my toenails nearly as often as I have to trim my fingernails.

As for me, I vote false on #2. My kids’ fingernails grow at the same rate as mine, and they’re ages 3 and 5.

Statement #1: True
Statement #2: False
Statement #1: True
Statement #1: True

I’m also going with #2 as false. All of the other statements seem plausible to me, but #2 doesn’t. My pinky fingernail doesn’t grow more slowly than the nail on my middle finger, and generally my nails seem to grow more quickly than my husband’s, but his fingers are longer.

Number 3 is false.

definitely #2
length doesnt affect growth rate.
though longer nails are more likely to chip or break.

I’m going to guess that #4 is false.
