Do Toppik Hair Building Fibers Work?

by Right Brain on August 31, 2009

Mel Cooley asks… Would the Beauty Brains recommend buying Toppik Hair Building Fibers for my slightly hair-impaired significant other?pc047 its not a bald spot

The Right Brain responds:
Well Melanie, thanks for your question. Whether or not you want to be with the kind of guy who covers up his bald spot is up to you. But we can clue you in on the technology behind Toppik.

Toppik Hair Building Fibers. Yeah, right.

The hype on this one is a bit hard to swallow. Here’s what Amazon.com says:

The best hair loss concealer on the market. Toppik fibers are restructured to merge undetectably with your hair when applied. It is a safe, natural way to eliminate the appearance of baldness and thinning hair. It’s not a spray, cream or cover-up. In fact, it’s so scientifically advanced that it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Toppik is an amazing new complex of tiny, microfiber “hairs” that perfectly blend with your hair. Toppik fibers are made of the same organic Keratin protein as your own hair. Through a unique process, these fibers are restructured to merge undetectably with your hair. You will instantly see a fuller, more natural looking head of hair than you could ever imagine.

Surprise: Toppik really works!

Surprisingly, Toppik fibers really do work. It’s really kind of amazing how well they fill in and disguise a small balding area. And they even look pretty natural (assuming your guy can match his hair color, of course.)  Even more surprising, the fibers actually stay in place during the course of the day. The only serious negative that we observed in our Beauty Brains test on random slightly balding males, was that if they got their hair wet (or even sweated too much) the color could smear. And of course, they’d have to reapply the product every day, which gets expensive.

How does it work?

The product is a fine powder made of the following ingredients: Keratin, Ammonium Chloride, Silica, DMDM Hydantion, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate. It may also contain yellow, red blue, and orange colorants to create different shades of hair. The formula is blended with just the right mix of keratin and silica to give you small hair-like fibers that adhere to the real thing. That means it works best when there’s at least a few scalp hairs to cling to.  If you just smear this on a totally bald scalp it won’t give the same effect.

The Beauty Brains bottom line

If your man is looking for a quick cover up for a thinning spot of hair, we’d recommend trying this product.

What do YOU think? Would you rather be with a guy who is “au naturale” with his hair impairment or would you like to be with someone who fakes it? Leave a hairy comment for the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

It makes me laugh, thinking of some guy spraying his head with what sounds like colored velour fluff or that spray snow-in-a-can!

I’d love a bald guy. My dh of 22 years is still hairy from head to toe. The way the bathroom floor is covered with hair, I’d swear that he gets out of the shower and shakes like a dog. When they figure out a way for me to package and market what he sheds…

I’ve got to admit, I ADORE long, long hair on a man, but I feel no guilt since my own is hovering at thigh length. :-)

But I know hair loss is a thing for guys — I can’t blame a guy for wanting to do something about it or not wanting to do something about it. His choice … *shrug*

I actually prefer a clean cut to bald guy. Long hair on a man is too girly for me. Okay, granted, I like some of the 70s style hair – but no longer then what Barry Manilow had back in the day – and only when it’s clean looking. However I still prefer shorter hair.

Anyway, considering Patrick Stewart was once voted World’s Sexiest Man by TV Guide readers what’s wrong with bald? He’s been bald since he was 17!

I think it’d be great for women with thinning hair. I have a thinning spot right in the front above my forehead that I apply Rogaine to twice a day. Toppik seems at least as effective!

Hey Righty – I thought your comment about not wanting to be with a “hair impaired” guy was kinda snarky. What’s up with that?

Right Brain August 31, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Sorry S.B. I should have known you’d be sensitive to that remark since you like to date guys who are so much older than you.

Jami August 31, 2009 at 9:03 pm

And what exactly is wrong with older men, RB? They’re sexier then younger, have more experience, are more mature, and aren’t afraid to open a door for a lady.

Older men rock my world!

Hey did anyone else get the “Mel Cooley” reference in today’s question? That cracked me up!

Right Brain September 1, 2009 at 6:33 pm

@Mid Brain: Ok, I give up. What’s with the Mel Coolie reference? I thought her name was Melanie. Am I missing something?

Mid Brain September 1, 2009 at 8:11 pm

“Mel Cooley” was the bald guy on the Dick Van Dyke show. I think he played the producer’s son or something. Pretty clever, eh?

Jami September 2, 2009 at 11:41 am

Mel was married to the producer’s sister, if I remember correctly.

Jami September 2, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Just looked it up on Wikipedia. Mel was the producer of The Alan Brady Show and was married to Alan’s sister.

Minor comment here: I don’t think it’s appropriate to give a guy a hard time for angsting about losing his hair when this whole website is all about the products that women use to make ourselves look fake because we worry about our appearance.

I can’t blame a guy for being concerned about his looks, or laugh at him over it. Frankly, I think it’s a nice gesture when men worry about that sort of thing, since it means he knows that it’s not just our job to make sex sexy.

Jami September 3, 2009 at 5:20 pm

Hey, if it makes him feel better about himself, then I’m all for it. That’s why I’m pro-plastic surgery for everyone over 18 and think that health insurance should cover it.

But if the guy is doing it to impress a chick that makes me laugh at him. Because no matter what tv will have you believe, most women aren’t concerned about a man’s looks. They want someone smart, confident without being an arrogant jerkwad, keeps himself clean smelling and looking, doesn’t pick his nose, and most important – treats them with respect and kindness.

Let’s face it, ladies, deny it if you must, but when it comes to men, we just want someone with decent manners who doesn’t abuse us and doesn’t have major BO.

While men tend to want women whom fit society’s standards of beauty.

I put on makeup and stuff, sure, but I do it for ME, not a man. If a man sprayed hair on his head for me, I’d tell him to take a hike. If he did it for himself though then it’s a different story.

Forget Nioxin and Procerin. Suffering a little with thin hair myself it makes so me mad that these companies make such unfair claims to women. Toppik is ok but if you want a thickener, try Nanogen instead. Sooooooo much better than Toppik. Better colours. Blends really well and stays in 10 times better. I have a wider parting than i used to and Nanogen is unreal. I saw a link on another forum for nanogen.tv which has lots of videos and it helped me so felt i should pass on the favour. Good luck

I am a fan of natural cures, I do not trust the FDA to thoroughly test these chemicals that people are putting on there head.
