Kixx has a question…I’ve seen commercials for the InStyler and I’m wondering if the old adage if it looks too good to be true, it probably is applies here. Is the InStyler worth getting, or am I better off using the CHI?
Sarah Belllum says:
At last a question that I can answer! It just so happens that I bought an Instyler a few months ago and I think this thing ROCKS! While Lefty and Righty normally make frowny faces whenever I bring up product reviews, they did agree to this one because the Instyler is so different from any other product that’s out there.
Instyler insights
For those of you who haven’t been watching enough infotainment, the Instyler is a new kind of hair styler. Part curling iron, part electronic brush, it kind of looks like that what would happen if your blow dryer turned into a Transformers robot: its a Robo-curler gone mad. And I love it. (Dont take my word for it, check out the Instyler video here.)
My 5 favorite things about Instyler
- Gives super style
- Adds curl and curve
- Easy to use
- Doesn’t feel flattening or damaging like a flat iron
- It does what it says it will do!
My big dislike
The bristles are not replaceable and I’m afraid they’ll wear out with heavy use. Plus this thing is expensive! (Maybe that’s why they try to get you to buy two at the same time. I suggest you do what I did and find a friend to go in with you on a little Instyler menage a deux, so you can order two and split the cost.
Sarah Bellum’s bottom line
While the Instyler isn’t for everyone, its MY new favorite cant-live-without hair gadget. If you’d like toit a try, would you please support the Beauty Brains and buy it through our affiliate program? We just had to upgrade our server to a larger capacity and this will help offset some of our costs. (Plus it will help keep Lefty stocked up medication. Trust me, that’s very important.)
What do YOU think? Are you intrigued by the Instyler informercial? Or do you think its just another BS beauty gadget? Leave a comment and share your thoughts with the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

I have seen the infomercial a few times, once with a pleading daughter by my side. My concerns are 1) none of the shots of it in use are on the frizzed hair. I’ve watched it several times and each time, they use it over a pre-straightened section. I’d love to see it in action; and 2) the shots of other flat iron’s “inefficiency” are done on hair with product on it, so of course the iron ’sticks’ and leaves marks.
But if a Brain says it’s a good buy, I might spring for the 2-fer offer they have…my daughter’s last Chi died after about a year and it may be a couple of more before she realizes how gorgeous her natural curls are!
Wow! Thank you for this review, Sarah. I am tempted to buy this. I have been avoiding heat styling my hair because it is damaging. Can any Beauty Brain tell me what level of heat damage one could expect from the In Styler? Would it be less than what you get from a flat iron, or from a blow dryer? Their video says that it is less hot than a flat iron.
This was recommended to me by a friend and I love it. I have curly, wavy, somewhat frizzy hair. It does not straighten like a flat iron, but smooths and relaxes my wild hair. I have to use the high heat setting, but it does not damage near as much as the flat iron. I severely damaged my hair with a Chi flat iron, so in desperation gave this one a try. I do use a heat protecting spray first, and that does help. Just don’t expect to get the same results you would get with a flat iron.
I purchased this instyler and love, love LOVE it!!! It’s the hits like this. That keep me buying into the misses..lol..
Ok where have I been?? I’ve not seen this product and I straighten my hair at least 4 x a week. Is it really that expensive? My only concern, would be hair getting tangled in the bristles and such but according to the comments and the video- that doesn’t seem an issue. I’m intrigued! (great blog by the way, hoping to get some ideas for products I need in my bathroom now!)

Question for Ms. Bellum – they tell you in the videos not to use product on your hair first – do you agree? Seems like a bad idea not to protect your hair.
Whatever your into – its always worth protecting your valuable gadgets, phones, ipods etc. with some affordabel gadget insurance.
