New Technology For Carry On Cosmetics

by Mid Brain on October 12, 2009 · 9 comments

This month Mid Brain reports on new cosmetic science stories while the Left and Right Brains take time off to work on the new Beauty Brains book.

Mid Brain reports:

Here’s good news for anyone who hates the airline’s restrictions about the kinds of cosmetic products you’re allowed to carry on an airplane. New scanner technology is being tested that can determine if a liquid is dangerous or not. If this works out, you can just scan your shampoo or body wash instead of having to repack it into those little three ounce bottles. Let’s hear it for X-ray beam spectral signature verification!

I’m not sure this will spell the end of travel-size products though. As baggage fees continue to rise and airlines become more strict on hand luggage, I think even after the restrictions are lifted people used to travelling with carry on bags only will still continue to pack travel sized items.

I also look for non-liquid or gel substitutes, like bar shampoo and powder hair thickener (Aveda makes some) and foundation.

I know how horrible it usually is, and what they usually do is just toss out half of what you bring. It was horrible. You definately dont wanna bring any liquids in, those are the 1st to go, so hard soaps are best.

For them to test to see if the liquid is actually dangerous, I like that. Maybe I can bring my liquid soap again. Hope so.

Thanks for sharing.

I’m not sure how useful it really would be. It’s not like the regulations they’ve added are really relevant. I’ve seen a couple articles talking about how completely unrealistic it is that someone could bring a couple liquids onto a plane, then mix them into explosives, which are supposedly the reason they’ve added these regulations. It’s all Hollywood movie fantasy.

They’re doing it to placate people into thinking it’s something effective instead of doing things that actually make us safer.

All I care about is if I can bring my iPod on the plane. Cause I can’t travel without music and I hate their “music” selection. Last time I flew they were actually playing Britney Spears! I only like people with REAL talent like Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond!

Shampoo and stuff can go in my regular check in stuff.

How quickly can this be implemented!!!??? Packing for air travel has been SO traumatizing for me since the damned liquid restrictions. I used to never check luggage because I feel that the airlines do not have utter accountability for MY belongings. I cannot explicitly trust them to look after my things. If my luggage were to be lost, I would be lost. I use very specific beauty products (some are not common and/or expensive); I would not be able to readily replace them.

I hate having to decide what has to go on the plane with me. I have to pack full size products in my check in, too, for it would be impossible for me to stuff all the liquids that I would need in a zip lock bag– even for a one night trip! I do try to find some “solid” substitutions when I can, but this does not solve everything.

I pray that this can change the liquid restrictions!!!

I find it highly unlikely that these new scanners will impact the restrictions on your cosmetics, especially if you live outside the EU. What is being implemented in the US is a new form of scanner that will allow the scanner to see through your clothes. That’s right, naked time at the airport. I’ll gladly give up my moisturizer or shampoo for the right NOT to be seen nude while traveling. :(
