Anti Acne Hair Care?

by Mid Brain on October 14, 2009 · 12 comments

This month Mid Brain reports on new cosmetic science stories while the Left and Right Brains take time off to work on the new Beauty Brains book.

Mid Brain reports:

It sounds sketchy to me, but here’s a new hair care product designed to prevent acne: Kairos Anti-acne Hair Care Treatment.

The active ingredient is Salicylic acid, a legitimate anti-acne ingredient (that has anti-dandruff properties as well.) But I don’t get it. It’s a shampoo so I see how it could help control acne on your scalp. But is scalp acne really a big problem? I usually don’t get zits on the top of my head. Or, are you supposed to wash your face with it while you wash your hair so it’s a kind of two in one product? Sounds more like a marketing gimmick than a product breakthrough to me.

What do YOU think? Would you use an anti-acne shampoo? Leave a comment and share your pimply prose with the rest of the Beauty Brains community.

I get quite a few little spots on my head but only the very occasional one on the rest of my body. I had put this down to the shampoo and conditioner I was using for my curly hair (it is pretty short so my conditioner gets very near my scalp) blocking pores or causing a breakout due to a sensitive reaction?

I’d think it might prevent/help acne on the face….. a lot of hair stuff causes problems on the forehead, temples, etc. Just a stray thought….

I get zits around and in my hairline a lot due to the oils from my hair. Also bacne from shampoo and conditioner running down my back while rinsing it out. Even though I scrub my back after I’m done washing my hair. So I think it would help in those two areas.

Neutrogena has been making a Salicylic Acid shampoo for ages:

They don’t make any claims about it regarding acne though, just that it will help with certain types of dandruff.

I do actually get the occasional pimple on my scalp (I think my whole body is acne prone, to be quite honest). However, I’ve never considered this to be bad enough to need a shampoo for it. I mean, maybe it’s an issue for girls with light hair? Or those with really short hair? Either way, seems a little pointless to me to use a product for something that doesn’t show on my scalp.

I know a lot of people who have seborrihac dermatitis on their face and into the scalp, so yes this shampoo would help them greatly, as salycinic acid would be the best treatment to break down oil deposits in the scalp. It depends on what strength BHA is in it and telling them not to put conditioner on their scalp…

That sounds bizzare! Having said that, I did have some acnes on my scalp right after I had chicken pox. I just use normal shampoos and the problem solved itself.

Dirty hair (especially dandruff) encourages outbreaks so maybe their premise is to prevent dandruff and in the process prevent acne??

Or you can just try Zit Blaster. It’s 100% natural and it worked for me ;)
