This month Mid Brain reports on new cosmetic science stories while the Left and Right Brains take time off to work on the new Beauty Brains book.
Mid Brain reports:
We’ve blogged before about how your lips can become “addicted” to lip balm. But Neosporin has a new product that goes beyond just moisturizing to actually repairing dry, chapped lips.
Instead of just putting a barrier layer on top of unhealthy lips that temporarily moisturizes, this new technology addresses the root causes of unhealthy lips with patented technology.

To be honest, I’ve never really suffered chapped lips. Occasionally, get a bit of wind burn when out walking the dog on the wild and windy fens, but that’s usually fixed with a single smear of petroleum gel or a touch of Lipsyl borrowed from my wife…
This is an ingredients list for Neosporin Lip Health, Daily Hydration Therapy SPF 20. I couldn’t find the ingredients list for their night lip cream, but I’m guessing it’s pretty much the same, minus sunscreen.
Active Ingredients: Octinoxate (7.5%) (Sunscreen), Oxybenzone (3.0%) (Sunscreen)
Inactive Ingredients: Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Isononyl Isononanoate, Polybutene, Petrolatum, Synthetic Beeswax, Sesame Seed Oil, Polyethylene, Behenyl Alcohol, Microcrystalline Wax, Glycerin, Stearoxy Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Flavor, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Titanium Dioxide, Tribehenin, Vitamin E (Dl Alpha Tocopherol), Sorbitan Isostearate, Sodium Pyruvate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Corn Oil, Cholecalciferol, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide
What I see is a pretty standard combination of oils, wax emulsifying agents and silicone. Maybe the addition of the last two is a bit unusual for a lip balm, but it’s a commonly used cocktail for face creams. Basically, you are putting a face cream on your lips. Is this approach better than general oil/wax combo….maybe, who knows. But what exactly is that patented technology that “addresses the root causes of unhealthy lips”? If they truly have a patten on a new technology/ingredient it should be safe for them to describe how it works in greater detail. This seem to be just another marketing trick.
Actually, after reading the “drug facts” on their homepage the active ingredient listed in “night formula” is…. white petrolatum….in other words petroleum jelly!

I have myself once had a bad problem of chapped lips but then I have turned to Eco Beauty Organics . Their lip care products are all organic and do not contain any harmful products… Their products have really satisfied me a lot.
I thought you guys were here to investigate the authenticity of product claims, not just regurgitate marketing blurbs. Statements like “this new technology addresses the root causes of unhealthy lips with patented technology” resemble the ad copy doublespeak people trust you to debunk. Your credibility suffers due to junk posts like this and your insistence on anonymity. If we can’t know your names, can we at least be told in what respect you’ve earned the title “cosmetic scientists”?
You make a good point with this one Milo. Don’t know how Mid Brain got this one through the scientific filter. We’ve been distracted with our book writing & website management responsibilities.
I, for one, am skeptical that this “patented technology” is going to help your lips any better than petrolatum.

I’m with milo on this one, where’s the research? Where’s the critical analysis of Neosporin’s claims?
I would also be interested in knowing what kinds of cosmetic scientists you guys are, i.e. what your training and areas of specialization are. I’m not accusing you of misrepresenting yourselves, I’d just like to know.
The Beauty Brains are cosmetic chemists that have developed formulas in the following areas. Skin care, hair care, & makeup. We also have experience working in the Claims Substantiation department of a major company.
Hey, I’m just posting news stories while the other brains are busy. I thought I made that clear that we weren’t researching this month due to the book project. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.
Mid Brain The Brains, Guys you did make that fully clear me think i smell a little jealosy!
You are so good at what you do and i often go through the older research which remember people costs us nothing for great honest advice.
I sell various beauty items and i like to be honest and pick and chose what i buy and use the beauty brains knoledge allot. I am a Therapist and Make-up Artist but you would surprised how much i have learnt from these guys!
That way i can be honest to my buyers and not just tell them what my suppliers tell me.
Sorry if i sound hostile i just love a bit of honesty

” This month Mid Brains reports on new cosmetic science stories….” but this you posted is jut a publicity story.
You didnt need to do a huge research to know that a product with 77% of petroleum jelly is not the result of any breakthrough technology that will solve chapped lips problem. The key is on the ingredients list, right???
Interesting. I’ve had really good luck with Neosporin, but I certainly don’t think it’s breakthrough technology. It’s a good lip balm, but that’s about it.
Heading to the store to buy a tube of generic petroleum jelly to use on my lips..my cuticles and elbows..anyone want one?
