The Left Brain updates:
I created quite a stir in the world of silk pillow cases last year when I tried to answer the question “Are Silk Pillow Cases Good For Your Skin? (Follow the link for the original post and all the entertaining comments.)
Silk from a sow’s ear?
According to the ASA (the UK organization that enforces British advertising laws) it looks like I was right. Cosmeticsdesign reports that they have ruled that Direct Beauty Products have not adequately supported their advertising claims that their silk pillow cases have anti-aging properties. A key issue was the lack of support for minimizing wrinkles. In this particular ad, the company even went so far as to imply that cotton and polyester pillow cases are a major cause of aging, second only to sun damage!
Despite the fact that the company presented a study from the American Academy of Dermatology suggesting that silk pillowcases might reduce sleep lines and wrinkles, the ASA upheld the complaint and said the advertisement must be removed from circulation. It’s nice to see a governmental body looking out for truth, honesty, and the scientific way! Now if the ASA could just go after Kinoki Detox Foot Pads.

With regular pillowcases, I used to wake up with lines all over my face, which would last for at least an hour or two for some reason. I had read that satin pillowcases were good for your hair, so I bought them (actually I think the ones I have are satin-like polyester pillowcases), and while my hair still looks horrible in the morning, I wake up completely line-free on my face. So personally I’m a huge fan of these types of pillowcases, and will never go back to regular ones. Obviously they don’t prevent wrinkles, but they totally prevent the temporary lines/indentations.
I have good results with just soft cotton ones and a down pillow. When i wear a face mask, though, or sleep on a harder pillow, yuck…
My MIL gave me several silk pillowcases. She uses them because they stay cool in our Texas heat. I hadn’t heard about the anti-wrinkle angle until y’all brought it up. I like them because they are soft and cool to the touch. Any wrinkles I wake up with are mine no matter how I sleep
So I read the previous post about this and it was the funniest thing I read all week. Those comments were hilarity.
I also wake up looking a lot more refreshed and line free on silk pillowcases compared to cotton. I believe it to be true..
The only fabric that is a true cosmetic moisturizer is JuveTex Rejuvenating fabric. The DreamSkin Beauty Pillowcase is made of JuveTex developed by Dr. Peter T. Pugliese, MD. Scientific studies do prove that JuveTex retains more water than cotton. The moisture will stay in your skin at night, as well as your expensive night creams. Moisture loss is the cause of wrinkles on your face.
The dreamskin pillowcase is great…such an amazing material! My husband loves them too. I bought 4 of them for my bed and I don’t think I’ll go back to the ordinary silk or satin pillowcases I was using before. I really recommend this product:

Silk is amazing. My hair has grown inches since I began using them last year & my skin is also looking great & blemish free as well. http://www.essenceofsilk.com has the best selection & free shipping.
I was skeptical, but tired of waking up with sleep creases on my face. It’s unbelieveable; I do NOT ever get up with those nasty sleep creases. My hair is fabulous; I get up, and just comb it and it looks great. I used to get up looking like I’d been in a fight! There is something to sleeping on a good quality silk pillowcase; you have to try it. There are so many benefits. More info here, hairtape.net
They also make hairpiece and fashion tape.
I’ve been using silk pillow cases for a year now and my rosacea has gone and my hair is very easy to manage. They are not a ‘miracle’ product but they can help maintain a good complexion and tangle free hair.
‘Left Brain’ may not be impressed but many people are…
I suppose the ‘proof of the pudding’ is what you look like first thing in the morning!
An old post but worthy of a comment;
I think the misconception of the original post was that the company in question made some major claims in the wrong context, for one claiming silk pillowcases ‘minimise wrinkles’ – this isn’t true. They do however ‘prevent’ wrinkles, more info on this, see http://www.silkkiss.co.uk
The suggestion that ‘cotton and polyester pillow cases are a major cause of ageing’ is also ludicrous, but there is no denying that silk has many benefits to skin, hair and health. Looking at all the comments, I am glad ASA has not stopped women ‘seeing the light’
