Interesting, but how about just buying your own drinks? or watching them being made? Or stop drinking when you have had too much? Date rape is unavoidable, but we can do our part to protect ourselves and we don't need a kit for that!

Oh, and I'd like to say, as someone at Jezebel pointed out, you can buy those same kits for a lot cheaper. So really they're a marketing ploy.

Yttrium, the article you linked is quite interesting. I grew up in a college town, so the specter of date rape drugs loomed over almost every social gathering I attended for years. Having observed years of college excess at home, during my own college years, and during my tenure as a server/bartender, I'm not at all surprised to learn that people are more willing to chalk up inebriated accidents to DRD's instead of their own doing. I'm not saying that date rape isn't absolutely heinous; that's a given. It's just I can reflect on dozens of lesser, ridiculous things I've seen inebriated people do that I'm sure anyone would rather have be caused by a spiked drink rather than their own stupidity and overindulgence.

On the other hand, a kid in my organic chem lab was busted for stealing university equipment to brew up GHB at his frat house, and one of my best friends was assaulted after his--yes, his--drink was spiked with a lovely combination of NyQuil and Rohypnol, so I know the risk isn't completely fabricated. (Still, the most common date rape trick at my alma mater wasn't roofies, it was when guys would slip Everclear into highly flavored drinks and pour them down the throats of inexperienced freshmen.) I guess that's the worst part of the 2LoveMyLips concept: it pulls focus away from more important and effective ways to reduce your risk of being date raped. Monitor your alcohol intake, be aware of your surroundings, use the buddy system, etc. Take charge of your own safety, don't rely on a flimsy little test strip that doesn't even work on White Russians!

@Vreify: Yea, I thought that wording was strange too. I checked with Righty who said that was a paraphrased quote from a secondary source (so it's NOT from 2LoveMyLips website!)
