Celeste asks…I have found out from this site that all I hear about silicone is not true. So what else is not true? Do I have to cleanse the silicone from my hair, or will it wear off? Can I use an Aubrey or some such shampoo or cowash?
The Left Brain responds:
Silicone is a much maligned ingredient; I’m really not sure what it’s done to deserve this reputation.
Wear off or wash off
Whether or not a silicone will “wear off” depends on what type of silicone you’re talking about. Dimethicone needs to be washed off. Cyclomethicone will evaporate off your hair just like water evaporates. Generally, any shampoo will wash away the silicone left on your hair from styling treatments and conditioners.
Is Aubrey acceptable
Any shampoo will wash away the silicone. Cowash will not be enough and the silicone may start to build up and weigh down your hair.

Silicon in hair products can weigh down your hair and some say they can be dangerous. I am more concerned by what I have learned when doing research on sulfates in hair care and have found them not to be safe. The American Journal of Toxicology “warned of the potential dangers of sodium laurel sulfates in cosmetics and hair products.” It has even be proven to be a skin irritant and can disrupt hormones.
Has anyone else heard this?
I have switched to a sulfate free shampoo ande conditioner I found on line:
http://www.beecology.com
I thought that you have to at least occasionally use a shampoo with no silicones as a clarifying shampoo, to avoid the effects of too much silicone build-up.
Bah. I used that sulfate free crap. My hair was SO UNhealthy. (And I used several different brands.) Give me the sulfates and silicones!
I can’t speak to the science, but in my personal experience since I went no-cone my normally-lank hair gained a lot more lift.
I’m always surprised when people rave about the no sulfates or ‘cones products. My hair does best with “traditional” shampoos and conditioners. Silicones smooth my frizz and I don’t notice them weighing down my hair. Is there any science about how hair can respond differently to those ingredients?
I think that silicones are wonderful, the protect your hair form breaking, make it shiny and look healthy..but it is true that it can build up and wear your hair down…but as long as you use a silicone free shampoo once in a while it should be ok..silicones are not an alternative for quality natural ingredients though, which actually can improve your hair, not only protect it and make it shiny…so once in a while we should use approved natural products as for example coconut oil or others, just do a reasearch.
